That is the activation switch. Metal flap is cycled to activate the heater under correct ambient temps

The heater control box is discussed in this thread: viewtopic.php?t=58924 The metal tab is operated by the door handle when pulled up on a locked door.
Note: the pot metal ring the attaches the unlock link to the key lock will break easily and as you can see in the linked ETK pages it is only avail with the key lock. A pain to put back in, too with the L-shaped slightly curved piece that holds it in place.
Looking at what you have, I’m thinking the control is held in place on the forward stud for the door handle and Adjusted to have the handle press the metal flap to activate.
