Modified motor mounts for the swap? Etc...

Post by mpowertech »

I have an 86' 635csi 5sp and I'm preparing to build a turbo set up w/ e23 bits. I have : Turbo/Manifold/WG/Intercooler/30# injectors. I'm waiting for funding to free up for: TialWG & Moose Adapter,Oil return line, 255lfuel pump, BEGI FPR, and TCD chip. My question is two fold, will the motor mount (DS) need to be modified along w/ Tial adapter, and I believe I need different studs for the exhaust manifold .(where can these be sourced?) Any other assistance is appreciated...PS- My A/C compressor has been removed, and at this time is not going back in. Thx!

I got away with using the stock motor mounts in my 84 633csi, but I think the later E24s are different. I did have to trim my passenger side motor mount a little bit, and clock the turbos intake to point upwards vs. downwards.

For the E24, I suggest getting that adapater for the tial, because the wastegate will sit on the strut tower, and you wont be able to remove it without raising the engine. Also it will create heat on the strut tower. You need adapters to make the turbo manifold work, I think some other group members can chime in on this.

The Oil return, assuming you are using the K27 from the 745i, is a very short stubby hose. Probably about 2.5" in length at most, with about an 1.5" Inside Diameter if I remember correctly. There is a nipple that the hose fits onto on the block, and I doubt the M30 has it.

Why e23 parts? Not to knock those using them but its not a great way to start a build. You're kneecapping it from the start with antiquated technology.

I will eventually upgrade. The only e23 parts will be the exhaust manifold and the turbo at the time of the build. They don't seem like weak links. Sure I can rebuild the turbo w/a better trim set, but financially its not happening right now. Its not like I'm going to grenade the plant w/ a couple of old oem stock parts. On order in the next month or so is a Tial WG and Moose Eng. adapter/BEGI FPR//TCD Software/TCD 30# Injectors/New studs Hflow 255lFPump and a brand new higher capacity FAIC. So its a new turbo build minus the Turbo and manifold. Anyway how about the motor mount issue?

I think the motor mount thing has been covered. I think the conclusion is that you need one from an early car (A B32) and that you may still need to shave the mount bracket. Do a search and see what you turn up.

B32 motor mount arm is $40 from the dealer. I wouldn't clearance a 535 arm.

I guess I can confirm that. My engine was a B32, and I got away with using the B32 mounts with the exception of modifying the passenger side. (I swapped in an M106) Like I said, the top of the mount needs to be trimmed, I used a grinder, just a bit, and the turbo's inlet must be clocked looking towards the sky.

Make sure the turbo does not have any shaft play, or you are just wasting your time.

Every turbo has shaft play. My ball bearing 35R has had shaft play since it was new. As long as it isn't excessive, allowing the wheels to contact the housings, you should be alright.
