It seems my original (to me) Bav Auto wires are giving up the ghost. So instead of just buying some stock wires now and probably needing to replace them next winter for the new build, I thought I'd look at a one time purchase.
The Magnecor 8.5 mm wires seem to be good and the company copy seems honest. I know they have been in business a long time.
Who here uses Magnecor wires with a MegaSquirt system and wasted spark? Are they recommended or to be avoided? Is there something else better?
I used a set of universal 9mm wires from summit ratcing, I crimped the ends on myself. No complaints, and the wire lengths were all good, so I even used the factory plastic harness thing.
I use custom copper wire with 1Kom resistors, I think the resistors were originally ment for old Mercedes injected engines, before carbon wires were invented.
This setup works, but I wonder how much noise it introduces to ECU?
I would happily replace this setup by modern wires, if the price is resonable. But I need a custom set, the length and coil terminals is nothing similar to original BMW set.
Stock wires are solid core. Not much advantage to be had over that. They are going to have resistors in them anyway, so they can be as fat as a garden hose and pass the same amount of current.

$135.00 US for the 8.5 mm set for the M30. They will make custom wires per request and cost is what ever additional materials amount to. (I imagine labor is virtually the same)
The only reason I went with universal was to have the correct lengths, since i'm running GM wasted spark. I take the mechanic side instead of the engineer on this and say as long as they are a decent name brand wire I dont think it matters. I run the mallory because the price was reasonable.

Unfortunately I cannot use stock wires, I have aluminium plate welded were distributor used to be....
I have different lengthes then stock setup, that's why I need custom wires.
I use double coils from Fiat Punto Turbo and Denso Iridium IK24 plugs.
i just ordered and received from Magnecor (w/cheap 2-day shipping) distributor boots and terminals as well as right angle coil boots and terminals.
the boots are high quality black silicone and the terminals are robust as hell. Magnecor was a pleasure to work with and i did the whole thing via email. they have several choices for plug wires, but you can use whatever kind of wire you want.
the terminals will work with any 7-8.5mm wire. i just like how they click into the distributor terminals and the coil properly. that's the problem half the time with aftermarket wires.
their KV-85 high end wire is like $4.90 a foot. You don't need more than about 20 feet (max) for an M20.
here are the part numbers if you want to roll your own. that's what i did, for fitment purposes (away from turbo!)
DB34-B distributor/coil boots ($0.68, this might be $1.68 ea actually)
T17 distributor/coil terminals ($0.68)
right angle distributor/coil boots $3.57
right angle distributor/coil terminals $1.25 (this piece is bad-ass...superb fit)
SP11 (spark plug boot, $2.29) &
T5-Z spark plug terminal ($0.77), uses the terminal nut
one thing to note from my own measurements, i believe the stock plug wires are about 1000ohms per foot. their kv85 stuff is about 2200 ohms per foot. as such, it should work well with MS. i just built a coil wire out of the KV85 and used my existing accel wires to save money. eventually i will use the kv85 all around. it's very nice and much easier to work with than the Accel wire i have.
i think my Accel wires are about 150 ohms a foot and it is possible that they introduce noise into the system. i will be experimenting with this in the coming days. i simply can't run stock wires for too long because they will melt due to heat in my bay.
i would definitely buy a better crimper from summit to do this job next time. summit has some cheap ones for $12 or so and they have a ratcheting crimper for $34. i don't believe a $300 crimper is necessary for a one-off plug wire project.
the terminals are actually so 'thick' that they tore up the little MSD crimper i had. anyway, i am a big magnecor fan...not because of all the hype on their site, but because i have used their wires and they work well.
