For anyone with a B&B exhaust

Post by Nicke28 »

Anyone have any installation issues with the B&B system? This is what I'm up against and to me it looks like either something wasn't fabricated right or I just got the wrong resonator pipes.

I believe that will exacerbate the problem. That fit quality looks more like a Stebro, I'm surprised B&B failed like that. You can shorten the top pipe in the photo, and hope your tips will still protrude the correct amount, perhaps another member can measure their overall length (ideally of one not installed, check the F/S Forum). Or you can weld on an extension to lengthen the lower pipe if need be. I would contact them with your photo and ask what's up before doing any modifications though. That ain't right!

This a pic of mine taken from the passenger side. Front of the car to the right and the rear to the left. It almost looks like they reversed the front sections on yours.
I think I may have some pics from when mine was new out of the box. I'll check when I get home from work.

I bought an adapter piece from autozone that fits fine over the shortened(?) pipe and the muffler. With another clamp it should do the trick.

I already had to cut out one adapter for one of the donuts because it wouldn't fit right. For the money that B&B charges for these systems I shouldn't have to build of use any adapters. Its not like this is a new design or one off system either.

have you tried mounting anything on the car yet?
Have you called BB or sent an email? You probably should contact them before you go and void any kind of warranty they have by modifying their system, even if it was wrong on their end.

Did you buy it from BavAuto or B&B direct? My shop talked with B&B this week (my Supersprint system is on backorder) and they did not have one for an E28 in stock, but did have the template and were willing to build it. They had E24 systems in stock. Sure you got the right one?

After messing around with it for a bit I've figured out that some of my problems were issues on my part.

Here is the B&B sitting in the car ready to go:

Bought it from Bavauto but it was shipped from BB's shop. I guess I got the last e28 m5 exhaust in stock... Image

To be clear, I did not ask B&B about an M5 exhaust. Mine is for a 535i, which is out of stock. Thanks.

I purchased from B& B a euro set up for my euro 635 years ago. The rear muffler cracked at the outer exit pretty quickly. I welded it but that quickly lost the stainless look(nasty welds).

Overall I liked the sound no droning but you could certainly hear me coming.

What was always a pain for me was the front down-pipe connection. The one pipe slipped on but the other pipe just barely had enough length to connect the flange gasket. I finally welded the two pipes together at a few place so they wouldn't twist and loosen the flange gasket. Then I used longer bolts with some rather large springs between the flange and bolt. Like you would use on a header down pipe. This fixed my issues.

Years later since I parted out the 635 I installed the rear muffler on my 533i. looks good and sounds good but not loud since its attached to my factory resonator.

In heine sight I should have sent it back to B&B before I started to weld it. Seems like they had a decent warranty but sending big items can get expensive. Probably they would have not helped me anyway. Most warranties are not worth the paper they are written on.

I think you screwed up on that. I have had two Tri-Flow systems (B&B) and had a small crack in one of them two years after it was installed and they replaced the section for free. The other was still in great shape after 6 yrs. They do stand behind the product.

:bawl: Good to know. I'm still running the rear muffler and it must be 10 years old, although welded many times. I should have contacted them.
The rear section where the pipes exit is very thin stainless. The sides are very thick IMHO.

They must have upgraded the design. The pipe thickness spec is identical to Supersprint's.

What'd you do about the cat?

When it's running will you give me a shout, I'd like to hear it.
I put an IE cat back on mine with the cats deleted.
I'd like to compare sounds.
I think I want something a bit more aggressive.

A nice looking set up, to be sure.

P.S.
You gonna be ready for C&C next weekend?

The cat is still stock, I haven't received my VSR cats yet.

The B&B has been installed for about 2 weeks now and I my self still haven't been able to hear it yet. My hold up is a pair of oil cooler lines from Elephantmotorsports... been 1 month and they still haven't been able to make anything yet. I talked to someone last Friday and he said I should have something by this Wendsday. If by some chance I do I should be able to get everything together for C&C this Saturday. If not September it is. :x

p.s. I might try to make it out to the Urbanspeed gtg on the 14th.

I would love to hear the BB exhaust. I installed on a whim a new resonator and Dynomax Bullet muffler after discovering that the stock muffler / resonator was bady corroded. Its a bit too much for my liking but was a quick last minute decision. I love the open throttle sound, but huge drone between 2200 and 2600 rpm. I am searching for solutions short of getting a new muffler. Would love to install an electric open / close waffle plate similar to what the Corvettes have. That would kill the drone at highway speeds but allow me to open it up when desired.

Nick / Sherman - I'll likely be at C&C and/or Urban Speed

The Urban Speed meeting just might get attended too, by me.

I was considering running up to Dallas to hear Mark's ///M5 with the BB exhaust this coming Saturday,
but if Nick get his going that won't have to happen.

Do keep us posted on the progress.
