Thrust Arm Movement

Post by andy535iyes »

I replaced my upper and lower control arms over the weekend to attempt to fix a shimmy that I only get at the track. After replacing the upper thrust arms, I noticed that I can move it slightly in a horizontal direction. Is this normal? Has anyone needed to reinforce the mounts?
Thanks,
Andy

The UTA bracket is supposed to actually clamp the UTA when the bolt is correctly tightened such that the arm center does not rotate. Normal suspension travel twists the rubber that surrounds the center.
If you read your Bentley manual you will see a routine whereby the car is sitting on the tires and weight is added to the front seat to put the arms in a rated load/ ride height position........then you tighten the center bolts to spec. A drive-over pit makes the job a cinch. Otherwise some other means of access is required.

The through bolt is currently at the correct torque and I'll have my alignment tech re-torque when I'm finished. Bushings are poly and I wouldn't expect side to side flexing. It's only about a quarter inch to each side. I don't see any evidence of elongation of the bolt hole.

Think I'd start over with some Meyle HD bushings installed as above if you plan to eliminate shimmy.
