Are front brake calipers sourced from Brembo?

I had a gas station conversation today w/ an elderly German man who claimed he used to be an engineer for BMW M back in the 70's. He really knew his stuff and was admiring my car.

He mentioned that the front brake calipers for our M5s were source or designed by Brembo. He pointed out a faint insignia on my caliper that did look like a "b" I know our brakes are not mono block units but they sure look like they are huh? Can anyone confirm this or is this ole guy smokin'.........?

Stock e28 m5 fronts are cast Ate 4 pot units. A lot of people upgrade to the aluminum brembo calipers from the 840s. No other BMW I know of came with brembo calipers from the factory though.

Apparently euro E38 735s came with 4 pot brembos as well.

take a look at the last photo in this previous post... there is no question they are ATE calipers.

Yeah, don't. Pad selection sucks and rebuild kits are $125 each caliper. Not including new pistons.

Given that you're forced to run 17" or larger wheels is enough for me.
