pulling turbo oil feed from pressure sender location.
To pull out the stock sender location and replace with a few fittings for the oil feed for the journal bearing turbo and a pressure sender would pull oil. But would the valvetrain be at a loss?

I used an oil distribution block from TRM.
It works fine for me. When I tested it (line disconnected from turbo) oil started flowing in less than a second.

I guess that it is viable for some people. cvillebimmer are you using a ball bearing or a journal bearing turbo? Do you know what pressure you're seeing?
I think I will want to measure how much oil comes from the spray bar with and without the turbo feed to really get a solid idea of the pressure loss.
I will eventually get a remote oil filter and tee off the return. I don't know if there is a manufacturer anymore though.

Drilling and tapping the housing is about as easy as it gets. I've been running my oil feed for my 60-1 from there for 2-3 years now with zero oil issues.86GT635 wrote:I can't put my finger on why, but that seems to be a smidgen more work than removing a pressure sender and screwing one in.

What is wrong with starting a little conversation? There is more than one way to get oil for a turbo.
Maybe you are thriving on controversy. Every time I ask a question, I either get replies (from several members defintely not all) like 'do it this way or you're dumb', or I get no answers at all.
I just figured that the subforum for forced induction would be more user friendly. I thought you all would be happy to share your intelligence.
And about having a clusterfuck; I asked this question prior to installing it. To get opinions and peoples experiences. The attitude? is directed to nobody who is not close minded enough to realize there are different ideas.

Back to the issue at hand. The pressure sender location obviously sees what pressure the oil pump of the engine has to offer. If it didn't there wouldn't be a pressure sender.

What BMW put there is not a pressure sender, it's a pressure switch. It's a failsafe to indicate when an unsafe oil pressure situation arises in the motor. BMW put it at the location in the motor with the lowest working oil pressure intentionally. If you want to know what the pressure is coming off the oil pump, you put the sender on the oil filter housing.86GT635 wrote:Back to the issue at hand. You're getting grief because you asked about putting it there, were given reasons to not put it there, yet the only opinion you listened to was the one that agreed with what you had apparently already decided to do. If you've decided you're going to do something, don't come here and ask if you should then get mad when everyone doesn't go along with you.
Considering the last 3 M30 heads I've pulled apart have had severely worn cams, I wouldn't even consider tapping from there.
As for the turbo, have you ever seen the oil light stay on for more than a second? Every second that light stays on for a cold start-up that is time the turbo is spinning without lubrication. If you tap from the oil filter housing, that time is reduced and so is the wear on the journal bearing.

Thank you! that makes the decision a lot easier. Moosehead, I didn't think about that, or even know. But it does make sense. I didn't know that was the location of the least pressure in the system.
I had not decided that was where I was going to get the oil from, but because it was included and used I wanted to know why someone would use that instead of the correct way, that the majority of people use. The reasons you just gave make it very clear that it is not the correct or smart thing to do.
I think the majority of worn cams stem from the banjo bolts backing out. But if pulling oil from the pressure switch location will rob the valve train, I wouldn't want to do that to a already susceptible problem.

Put the pressure sender at the same place as the switch. A simple search will show multiple methods of accomplishing this.

You lose pressure. Just as you do when you tap from the head. Honestly though, I would more concerned with the turbo spinning oil-feed-less than losing pressure to the head. Thats a good way to shorten the life span of a journal bearing turbo.
