Took the e28 to the track tonight.- update 1.61 60ft !

Post by T_C_D »

Wow, all I wanted was one clean run but it didn't happen.

First had to actually tune the WOT. That took 3 runs. Then had to tune the portion of the map right off the stall. Took 3 more runs. Tried tuning the boost control all night. Couldn't stop it from spiking in 1st and 2nd gear and hitting the overboost protection. 3rd gear was a solid 180kpa. Even disconnected the boost control and ran on the spring (7psi) and accidently shifed the car into neutral at mid track ( ).

Anyway. Made huge progress. Here is the good news.

Car is going to launch hard ever time. I am thinking 1.6x 60 foot times should be doable. Best run came with launching at 3285rpm at 7.25psi according to the datalogs. Too bad it hit the fuel cut 3 times in 1st gear and once in 2nd gear.

1.78 60ft
12.49 @ 110.49.

the 8psi run while shfting into neutral

1.84 60ft
12.94 @ 106.68

I am hoping to get to the track one more time just running on the spring at about 15psi.

Will load a video tomorrow.

Todd

With MS2 boost control, I think you probably needed a smaller spring to have good overshoot control
We used 5# for similar targets

We'll know later today when I bump the boost to 1 bar. Taking the car back to the dragstrip tomorrow.

I am disappointed that the tranny consumes so much power. The lack of the lock up stall must be 30-40hp because the car isn't running much for mph. My calculations put the power loss at an additional 10% over the manual tranny.

I need to see if I can control a 4hp22eh and lock the converter up after the launch.

Got back tot he track. Was able to launch at 3300rpm and 8psi. Resutled in a 1.68 and 1.61 60ft time. Car won't run any mph or make full boost in 3rd gear. I suspect a major mechanical failure somewhere.

Best et 12.32 @ 111mph.

Time to yank the engine and tranny and see what's wrong.

The tranny is weak but i think the converter is broken and has become highly inefficient.

Oooo, that would be interesting. Please do let us know how that works out.
That would be pretty cool.

Saw thison another board. Not cheap, but it's been done.
Brief Description of operation

The Compushift is a 'stand alone' ECU that controls the electronic version of the 4HP22/24. It takes 4 inputs from the vehicle and calculates the shift points, shift pressures and converter lock up speed depending on the shift tables or 'maps' in the ECU. This is a major step forward for those using the ZF in different applications as you are able to map your own shift speeds and pressures very easily and quickly without the complexity or hassle of a laptop.
Hope it's just the T/C. Not related, but did Paul imagineer this head for you?

Peter would build a MegaShift control unit for me and we would tune it together. Paul built the head but that isn't the problem.

Cool, didn't know that was an option.

I was just curious about that head I thought I had read somewhere he built it.

The place that is doing your converter, are they able to manufacture a more exotic/aggressive converter clutch? Or is the stock clutch able to hold at WOT with big power?

I believe the way the converter was modified is what is causing it to be inefficient. Not being able to lock up is also a HP killer.

Will have to find a new shop to modify the converter.

I'm tuned in!

Someone else would be also after bad experience with a shop for their TQ build, but he decided to convert 5-spd. :(

It's the easy way out and even I am seriously tempted by it.

X2.
I'm tempted as well but I'd like to see how this turns out first.

So the engine is ok then?

Todd, as much as I'd love to see an auto work out, (I still have my 4hp22eh and botched converter just in case) I'd also hate to see your waste time with it and put off seeing the full potential of this build.

Either way, good luck with getting the trans sorted! I'm looking forward to results that are up to TCD's standards. Not that this machine isn't already impressive enough as it is.

HORRIBLE gear ratios. 3.06:1 first to a 1.62:1 second...

Converting to 5 speed. :bawl:

I don't have the energy to endure the pain of developing a suitable automatic.

Good luck and keep up the good work.
