Do you have the owner's manual or a Bentley manual for the car? If so, either will have the BMW recommended oil viscosity rating for the ambient temperature range jn which you will be operating the vehicle. Buy your favorite brand and change it and the filter at reasonable intervals and you should be fine. I like Castrol GTX 20W50 and 3000 miles.

As Mark has stated use the viscosity recommended for the ambient temperature, altitude has no impact.

I've been using Valvoline VR1 racing oil because it has a higher ZDDP content than most other conventional oils. It's also readily available at many of the nat'l chain autoparts outlets and relatively inexpensive. Buy your filters online in bulk, and change the oil every 3k - 5k miles.

x2 on the Bentley viscosity chart and that altitude has no effect.
I have been running Mobil 1 15W-50 for about 10 years without an oil related failures. I feel that it ZDDP content is adequate and for the past 3 years I've kept it in my car year round because the car is garaged and I have another car that I can use when it is cold/snowy. Prior to that when I was driving my e28 year round I would switch to Mobil 1 10W-40 from October to March, but I've come to understand that its ZDDP content is much lower than the 15W-50. I don't currently know of a high content ZDDP 10W oil, maybe someone could chime in.

Enjoy your car and they work great in the snow so long as you have real snow tires and an LSD.

20W-50 15°F to 122°F
15W-50 -4°F to 105°F
15W-40 -4°F to 85°F
10W-50 -20°F to 68°F
10W-40 -20°F to 50°F
10W-30 -20°F to 40°F
5W-30 -40°F to 22°F
5W-20 -40°F to 15°F

Info from the BMW owner's manual

I'll put a vote in for M1 15w-50. I think it's one of the best choices out there, and it's available in 5 quart jugs from Walmart fairly cheap.

I live in C Springs and run 20w50 through the warm months (May - September) then I switch to 10w40 in the colder months (Oct - April) My local Wallyworld doesn't carry any XXw50 oils. It's all 10-40 or 5-30.
