possible broken fuel pump?

Post by jakwoo39 »

in my 85 m535i when i go to start it, it will turn over for a long time before starting . the only way to stop this happening is if i leave the ignition in the on position for 10-15 seconds before turning it over (kind of like when you start a diesel without glowing it) have all ready changed the fuel filter so could this be a dying fuel pump?

It sounds like the check valve is hosed. All it takes is a chunk of dirt. to keep it open. Separate CVs are available. A pressure gauge. is a quick and easy test for fuel pump condition.

No and no. The fuel pump only comes on when you are cranking or the car is running, not with the ignition. There is no prime or pressurize function with the key on, but not in start.
