Has anyone attempted to fit e34 steering box into e28?

Thanks.

When I bought my car, it came with a non-E28 power steering box. It is of either E32, or E34 origin, non-servotronic. Many years ago, I've checked it out, but in the meantime I forgot the conclusion :(

It worked without any mods. Just the position of one of the hoses is different, but it is well without the routing limits of the hose, so there are no issues.

If you have time and patience to wait about 1-2 weeks, I'll reach the garage where I keep the car during the winter and I may be able to return with more accurate information.

I'm pretty sure I have both. Let me know if you want some pics.

I'll need to dig them out.

Interesting... It would be nice to know. I have a fairly cheap e34 m5 box for sale locally...

did anyone ever figure out if the e34 box will work? i think im in need of a new steering box and would rather get a newer one with less wear.

The conclusion I remember being reached (and should be in the archives somewhere) was that the non-servotronic boxes worked fine, just that one of the PS hose connection locations was different as Robert mentions. I don't remember if there was any kind of workaround for the servotronic units. IIRC, they default to the "loose" setting without the controls hooked up, so you wind up with many turns lock-to-lock as a result.

The servo for the servotronic is just there to provide a restriction. It could easily be locked in the "on" position mechanically or it could be wired to turn on with the key on. They often leak, though, so I'd go for a regular box if available or make a blanking plate.

anyone know anything about turn to lock ratios? a permanently engaged servotronic sounds like a mighty interesting prospect. if its down to 2.5 turn to lock, or even a e34/e32 steering box if they can be had at anything less then 3.5 turn to lock. the normal m5/m6/635csi steering box upgrade isnt as easy to come across as e34/e32 parts.

Since the engine is out I took some pics of the e34 steering box.
Looks like the pitman arm is different. Let me know if you want more.
