Advice request: found 524td, thinking of buying

Post by mrdane »

It's a 1985 524td. Mileage estimated between 150k and 200k.

Timing belt last changed about 9 yrs, and 80,000 miles ago (current owner had the belt break shortly after purchase, and had a different engine put in.)

Some minor issues:
brake pads/rotors need replacing,
a CV boot is ripped,
minor dent in trunk,
minor rust at leading edge of front wheel wells,
dash cracked,
A/C blows cold when full but loses charge over time,
odometer DOA.

Current owner says it was "burning out glow plugs" but believes his mechanic has sorted that out.

I have not seen the car in person yet. Asking price is $2,000.

I walk to work, but am looking for a diesel to use for shopping trips, etc (which can get lengthy here in South Dakota).

I will be getting rid of my 1992 325i and keeping a Eurovan.

I like to think I would replace the auto in the 524td with a manual (but we shall see.)

Comments? Advice? Suggestions?

And, thanks for the forum!

Not normally a problem.

A Big Problem (Ask the current owner!). Don't drive it without changing that belt.

Correct. All minor problems and except for the body and dash, straightforward fixes. In the case of the a/c, maybe expensive, too.

Another SoDakian! Welcome! What city/town?

As for the car, C.R.'s advice is sound; that timing belt needs to be changed asap. At 80k it's living on borrowed time. The rust on the fenders shouldn't be a huge issue, but check the other likely places for rust... In the trunk, in the front shock towers, jack points, behind the splash shield inside front fenders, etc... Search is your friend on mye28. What to look for in a car has been discussed many times and shouldn't be tough to find.

Where is the car located?

Plankinton, SD

The car is located in Duluth, MN.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to drive it back to South Dakota without the timing belt being changed first.
