M30B34 weighs?

Post by edlocke »

How much does the complete motor and 5 speed trannie weigh ? Any thoughts?
I was reading up on the 535 that sold on Ebay with the LS1 motor. Someone mentioned the weight of that combo is in the 500lb range with motor/trannie.

The M30 weighs approximately 315 pounds.

And this from another forum:
"However, I found a couple of GM press releases that indicate the "new LS1 engine saves 65 lb. over the previous small block." The 60's -70's small block Chevies were typically ~575 lb. Like the Fords, the blocks got somewhat lighter as GM struggled with fuel economy. So maybe a more modern small block Chev would be around 560 -565 lb? Subtract the 65 lb. weight savings GM claims for the LS1 and you're right around 500 lb."

I don't know about the transmissions, but it looks like the LS1 is going to be about 185 pounds heavier than the M30.

I've also heard the 315 lb figure. I can personally attest to the fact that the short block alone is one heavy, finger pinching Momma to move around till you get it up on a stand.

The 315 or so figure is correct. What's interesting is that the new alloy V-8s don't weigh that much more -- just a few pounds in fact. Progress and all that.

Weight vs hp

Post by edlocke »

Ok, so you put the battery in the trunk, drop the LS1 in and gain 140 hp.
How much hp can you buy for 2500.00$ m30b34 (cost of used LS1/trannies)
I know these questions stir a lot emotions but let's look at this as a fun blvd curiser and not a "track" best in handling.
After all I enjoy riding around in a non specific ride that kicks the crap out of rides costing thousands more!

If you want to go fast in a straight line, buy a traditional American muscle car. Given that the e28 is already prone to understeer, dropping another 185lbs or so (say an LSx is now 500lbs) over the front axle will make it a pig in the handling department. That's the main reason not to do this.

Brad (bigbronzerim) is probably pushing 350hp for less than $2500 in his turbo build, but he did all the work himself.

That may be, but being a V8, it's a shorter motor, so the weight is generally further back than with the M30.
