removing in-tank pump and intake

Post by biotd »

Have a suspicion that either my intake is clogged or my in-tank pump is dead on my 85 TD. What's the right angle/trick to pull the sending unit out of the tank in the trunk? Everything disconnected, but it hangs up when I try to remove.

Thanks!

Simple. Which I guess is why y'all ignored me :-)

Remove the sender/fuel gauge (?) first, then the lift pump unit. Start with the smaller internal circle of nuts first, then pull out the sender/gauge cylinder, then pull the entire intake.

If it is dead, replacing that Pierburg pump in the tank will make a big difference in the way that engine starts up and operates! It really is surprising...

What did you replace it with? I have two pumps, one is dead, the other hardly ever works (I have to hit the trunk floor, once in a while it will fire up...)

I'd like to replace it with something newer / more reliable.

*edit*
Also, is the pressure output from the lift pump regulated somewhere? I would assume it is since there is a return. If it is regulated, I should be able to put any diesel specific pump in there correct? An oversized in tank pump should just net more return to the tank and the same pressure after the regulator.

I didn't replace it this round. Just cleaned it up, and tried to clean up the tank a bit... I had all kinds of crap in there.

I don't think you need to replace with an in-tank unit. Just an inline with a new intake probably the way to go. Something like the FASS or Airdog would be the large upgrade, overkill and pricing maybe.

I'll be revisiting soon I'm sure.
