How do you think these wheels would look on the M5??

Shifty's first 528e was light blue, and had similar if not identical wheels. It might give you an idea @ 16 inches.

IMO, too big for the car. Too open. A little flashy.

I just think that car is too classic to put modern style wheels on it.

But that's just one mans opinion.

PDX, I have no problem with you linking to my pics. Especially that car. I miss that one!

TT, if you're going to go with a wheel like that, you might as well go with a BBS. As PDX said, those look very similar to my old BBS RX wheels. Mine were 16x8 ET35, but they also had a 16x8 ET-something else, like 22 or 20 or something that doesn't have as much of a flush look.

There are SO many BBS wheels out there to choose from, TT. You might check out Strictly German's website. They have a lot of the BBS wheels on there, and of course Tire Rack has a limited selection of them to view on a US-spec E28.

If I can be politically incorrect here......No, I think they cheapen the look of the car. I would
stick with the period standards. I know it's boooooring, but nonetheless the car isn't.

I like it Tony. If you do something interesting with the brakes, that can be seen, making the brakes a part of the overall art of the car.

BBS soes have some interesting wheels strikingly similar to those, and a couple that are extremely light, maybe 16 poiunds of so for 17x8's. A lighter wheel will compensate not just a little for the increase in wheel diameter on raide harshness.

Now that I know more about ASA, I'd say those you pictured would be fine, if they're light. :p

Maybe I'm old fashioned, hell I know I'm old fashioned, anything over a 16" wheel just doesn't look right on the E28. Definitely need a "period" wheel on this model. I'm partial to the Style 9's that I have on the M5 right now.

TT,

What's wrong with the wheels and tires you already have on the car?? They're period correct and you have at least $600 worth of rubber (Brdgestone S-03) on them now.

When I bought my M5 it had Chrome Hartge Style A wheels,setup as openlug, with BMW bottlecap hub covers. The ET13 offset combined with the 225/50 tires made the car look bottom heavy, but it was lacking something, IMO it needed a different airdam, sideskirts and a rear skirt to giv it a finished look. When I switched to the openlug ALPINA wheels it trasformed the look of the car, an additional plus was the handling was greatly improved (no more tramlining).

If you want the BBS RS look, I think you should acquire the real deal, in a correct staggered setup. Remove the Euro M5 front spoiler and install a full Zender spoiler kit along with Brembo 4-pot brakes. Otherwise stick with the classic look.

But before you do anything in regards to wheels, you should SMOG the car. It doesn't make sense to start spending $$$s on wheels and other mods if you can't get the car through SMOG and titled.

ASAs are not "BBS knock-offs" -- ASA has design and technical interchange with BBS and the ASA wheels are high quality. See this link for more info. As for them being "cheap-looking," I have seen them in person and they look every bit as good as a BBS.

Anyhow, Tony, I think they'd look good on the car.

The wheels themselves look nice. 2 of my friends have them on there E36's. One of them bent his front passenger one really bad, i mean REALLY bad hitting a pothole, getting off of 287 here in NJ. I was 2 cars behind him (carvan) and i swerved just in time and clipped it kinda. My big ballon looking tires w/ the basketweeves took the pot hole in stride. Gotta love those Jersey roads. Back to the wheels. I wanted them also but after seeing my friend bend his rim i rethought my chioce. HTH

Sure, your "big balloon" tires took the hit fine -- as you say, they're "big balloon" tires, but you're telling this anecdotal story and blaming his ASA wheels for bending without mentioning some key info: how fast was he going, and what tire and wheel size was he running?

I think those ASAs look great. Maybe not appropriate for such a rare car though. I would have a bit of a problem justifying $2000 for wheels on a regular E-28, but that's just me.

Still, they're not so light at 22.5 pounds, but certainly cost effective.

There's a BBS that's 18.8 pounds, not too heavy, but not cheap either. ~_~

I guess it's all a matter of opinion. I do agree that wheels look a lot better if they have some depth to the face, but dont think they necessarily require a lip. The low-offset BBS RC's have quite a dish (is that the right term?) to them, which IMHO more than compensates for the lack of a phat lip. The same wheels dont look nearly as cool with the higher offset for e36/46 cars because of the flatter face
