Taboo: Widest wheels fit on an e28?

Hey guys.... don't know if anyone here will be done for helping/supporting my search, but anyone know what the widest/lowest offset wheels anyone is running on their e28 without a widebody is? I'm about to drop cash on a new set, and just want to see if anyone has come close to the dimensions I'm looking at.. I want to see what neighborhood the wheels will be sitting in.

I know people run 255's in the rear with a 9" wheel and an offset of 24-26. Also, since I know you're looking at lowoffsets...eze56 (Edgar) has 17X9.5ET13's in the rear and he seems to be well off with a 235 on there...Note this is all with rolled/trimmed fenders.

I'm not looking for tire width, just wheel width. Thanks for posting Edgar's car, Austin. It looks good, but he's also riding a couple inches higher than I am. I know I'll have to lift the car up a little bit to fit what I'm aiming to, but it shouldn't be nearly that much.

I'll definitely be rolling the hell out of the fenders as well. Anyone have pics of majorly rolled fenders to post up as well?

Go back to this post, then to the thread linked therein (and maybe further to originalMJG's profile to see all his threads).

You can get at least a 6" backspacing to not hit the rear control arm, maybe more. My 16x8 et38 RKs and other folks' 16x9 et26 both have 6" backspacing and clear; in my case, I didn't note how much room was left, but could do so next time I swap track tires in early October. Thanks for an informative post.

I'm somewhat worried. I've done the math and looked at the car, and am pretty sure I can make these wheels fit. Looking at originalMJG's car it looks like they won't fit. I'm just sort of mixed on it.
Any others?

17x9et26 reras with 255/40s............this is at full compression and theres at least a 1/2" clearance between tire and fender............

IIRC, Big Bronze Rim is running 17x10 wide OZs on the rear of his turbo car. I believe the offset is 19 in the rear. He's got 17x8.5 ET13 up front, I know for sure.

Brain hurts today and I'm too lazy to check. Those are the widest I know of on a car that resembles a stock E28. Obviously something happened with the fenders.

Chris nailed the wheels specs even though his brain hurt. Tires are 235/40/17 and 255/40/17.

Fenders have had heavy metal "persuasion" inside the well. I may massage it a bit more as it will rub a bit with weight in the back when hitting a large bump. It should help out when I get my stiffer suspension on as it's pretty low but with a low spring rate. I've got more pics if anyone cares.

Don't worry. IMO, they are the BEST tire for the price. They are sticky enough to hold me in the corners on the street with the GC's and that is all I need. You can't beat the price/performance for a tire. I'd imagine you go through tires pretty fast anyway.

Ya, they don't last too long on the car (in the rear anyway) but they have worn very well so far. I like them so much I ended up putting a set on the wife's e39 a few months ago.

I had ACT (Ronal basket style w/ locking center caps) wheels in 1989 briefly on my M5. Rears were 17 x 9.5 w/ 265/35/17s! Over kill but looked mean. I don't even know where to start looking for the pictures though. I think we only had polaroids back then

Ive had 18x10 BBS RC's on the back of a virtually standard 528i. The tyres were 265/35/18 and the offest was ET26. It was just a test and I didnt drive far with them. But they fitted and looked pretty cool.
