Ignition Coil reallocation with turbo set up

Post by babisbabou »

One thing is for sure, you need to reallocate the ignition coil after using a turbo set up like BBR's (or like mine) where the turbo is near the ignition coil. So this is what i have done :

But i think it needs more cooling than this, it gets really really hot!! the position i chose is a good one i think because the turbo(aka heat) is on the other side of the engine bay and where it is placed now the air from the fun hits it for more cooling, but is is not on a direct contact this the car chasis which provides better(maybe) cooling.

I thought of using an pc fan on it...

any other ideas?

One recommendation - the coil really needs to be laying down. It is filled with oil to keep it cool and if its standing up it won't cool properly ( alot of the older coils were oil filled - I am not 100% sure if the Bosch one is, but I believe it is). See if you can mount it laying down and see if it runs cooler before you add a fan.

Thank you for your advice BBR,
and there also comes a second question about the Control unit transitorized ignition she also gets hot and the car goes misfire after she gets hot at 3.000 rpm!

If your ignition module isn't bolted to something metal, it probably should be. That would help act as a heat sink and keep it cooler. Also, what plugs and plug gap are you running?

Isn't the coil vertical in the default mounting location? Is this not optimal?

You know, you are right. It's been so long since I have had my coil in the stock location I didn't even think about it. Alot of the older domestic and (gasp) British coils required that the coils be mounted in a horizontal position. I do know though that there should be no issues from mounting the stock Bosch coil in a horizontal position. A coil will get hot. It's just part of the game but too hot (usually caused by too much dwell) can shorten the life of the coil.

Thank you for the info, well i use the stock type plugs (NGK) and default plug gap, should i change the gap or the plugs?
(as referred to your manual, i should use colder plugs)

I would gap to 0.028" or 0.71mm and I use NGK heat range 7 or 8 for a turbo application.

i guess i will follow your advice BBR ;)

Well i will not change them immediate because i have to unscrew a lot of screws to reach all of them, but when i start again i will definitely will ;)

If you are running a hotter heat range (remember with NGK numbering a lower number is a hotter plug) just be really careful with boost. A stock NGK heat range is a 5. I am running a 7. If your gap is too large you risk the spark being blown out and you will get a misfire.

I guess i have to check my plug ASAP, but as i mentioned on my project topic i can not work with the heat over here in Greece, it is 40 celcius at least i am on a mountain and it is not wet! But first thing to do will be change plugs. ;)

It should definitely get more airflow there! That ought to keep it cooler.
