crank nut pulley vibration damper harmonic balancer

Post by veggigolf »

Hey you 524td gurus out there! Any idea how to get the %*@!$ nut off the crank pulley to get to the timing belt? I searched and read all these posts on how to do the timing belt, but I've found nothing on removing this nut for the 524td. I've broken every tool I've tried to hold the pulley in place. I have a 3/4" breaker bar with 7/8" socket (I know it's the wrong size but it works and I don't know what the right size is much less where to get one with a 3/4" drive) and a 10' cheater pipe.

I tried blocks of wood to hold the pulley and just broke the wood. I've tried metal and bent it like electrical wire. I bent the angle iron from my cam holding tool! I bought a chain wrench but it's too small to fit over the pulley.

I'm really frustrated with this nut. Please someone help!

Crank pulley removal

Post by gyveri »

Hi,

When I changed my timing belt, I did not remove the crank pulley nut. I simply removed the pulley by undoing 6 bolts that hold the pulley in place. With the pulley removed, the timing belt cover can easily be removed.

Regards

The correct size is 22mm. I am replacing my timing belt now. I'll report back when I figure out wtf you're talking about.

Do you have access to the Lincoln Continental Mark VII Diesel supplement? This has the best description of the process for replacing the timing belt that I'm aware of. It has nice line drawings instead of those fuzzy photographs in the BMW manual. See page 22-07-15. The only thing I would add is that, in step 5, you remove only the fan pulley. You don't have to remove the vibration damper.

I called a local BMW mechanic and he helped me. No, you don't have to remove the nut (thank GOD) but you do have to remove the vibration damper and you can pry it off with a crowbar.

So I completed the timing belt job, used the Lincoln supplement and the suggestions on this forum (5/16" drill bit to lock IP) got the thermostat and water pump in, fixed the leaking thermostat housing, and now...

she won't fire. I must have messed up the timing on the IP. I did turn the engine 2 times to make sure I had valve/piston clearance. So when I adjust the IP sproket, which direction do you suggest I go?

Thanks a million. Can't wait till this baby runs again. I've only driven her twice!

I think your best bet is to redo the timing procedure.

Took me a while, but got it running decently well. Hopefully the in-town BMW guy will get a dial indicator and will help me time the IP to get it to optimal performance. Now I have an overheating issue to troubleshoot (thread is in tech talk).

Thanks for all the help!
