Head gasket replacement
Head gasket replacement
Coolant is disappearing in my 86 524. Looks like a head gasket job coming up. I think it has the factory gasket, is there a stronger aftermarket gasket? Is there more than one gasket model available?. (Had a Peugeot diesel and there are three different gaskets depending on the amount of "piston overdeck") Can the original head bolts be re- used? Any info appreciated.

Try torquing the head in a pattern 1/4 turn on all bolts
This might fix the problem if it's the gasket.
I just recently did my headgasket, because coolant was leaking out between the head and block right at #6. There are indeed different gaskets. 3 to be exact. 1, 2 or 3 holes. If you have the factory gasket then to find the holes you will need to remove the intake silencer, and use a mirror to look underneath the head on the front. You might need to use a rag to clear out all the dirt up under there. Both TD's I've owned were 2 hole gaskets.
If your gasket has been replaced then they moved the tab with holes to the back of the block still on the passenger side, but you won't need to remove anything to see them.
I used brand new Torx bolts and head gasket from the dealer. The head gasket is of high quality and I strongly recommend using BMW parts in a critical area.
To use the new Torx, torque to yield bolts, there is a new torque proceedure that is in my post a few down about head bolt torque.
