New E32 Color Tag: SONDERLACK - AND THE WINNER IS.....

Post by c_spargo »

OK - so I've more or less figured out this means "Special Lacquer", or custom color.

How do I figure out what color the car actually is if the color sticker doesn't tell me?

Literally translated, 'Other paint'.

Assuming BMW painted it red, I would check to see what they were using that year. ISTR Henna was the bright red that succeeded Cinnabar.

Nope. Henna was the orangey red that preceded Zinnober, seen on E21s, the rare E24, and very early E30 M3s. Hellrot was an E36 red, but I think Brilliantrot came before it.

"Sonderlack" would've most likely been ordered through the BMW Individual program for an e32 if I'm not mistaken. If you check with BMW, they might be able to help you out.

I went back and looked at your original photos - it sure looks like Brilliant Red to me. It has that almost-pinkish optically-brightened look to it in certain light. Just my guess. I spend a weekend this summer bringing out the paint on a 325ix in that color, so, it looked real familiar.

We'll have to compare it to my iX which is Cinnabar red (although it is kind of faded.)

My cousin has a euro 528i. I don't remember the model year but I'm almost sure it's painted Henna. I'll have to ask him about that.

And I will bring over my red e28 fender, and red e30 parts, and I think I might have some more red colors of parts in the basement. :)

I think Cinnabar is darker.. more... ummm....cinammon-y.

Brilliant Red is more vibrant, with a hot pink hue to it.

Believe me, it's eye-opening at noon in August, freshly polished and waxed

Take the car to Red Rooster in bloomington, they have a digital paint thingy..... They just put it on your car and it reads the color and tells you the paint code.

Ummmm, no. Cinnabar is a common name for mercury (II) sulfite (HgS), a mineral. It has nothing to do with cinnamon. I think it has another common name as well.

<Googling ...>

Ah yes, vermillion. Like most natural red pigments, cinnabar is highly toxic (remember using "Cadmium Red" acrylic and/or oil paints in elementary school?).

I recall that a couple of the guys here on the board can take your VIN and decode all the options, although I don't know whether or not that would tell you the real name of the color.

Tammer - I was talking about cinnamon as in the spice. Cinnabar red has a cinnamon-red hue. Like Cinnamon Red Hots used to look like. And it certainly is darker than Brillant Red.

I know. And the name Cinnabar has nothing to do with the spice.

And straight up garden variety E30 318i and 325e cars back in '84. Sweet color.

If you run the VIN in the ETK, I'd bet a fair amount of money that it'll show "SONDERLACK" as the exterior color.

Justin B (BMWJustin) has a similar problem with Hartge car. It's been repainted a different than original color, and the original color was a custom job by what would eventually become "BMW Individual". But since that entity didn't actually exist yet, documentation is fairly difficult to obtain. Trying to figure out what the actual original color of the car was is problematic to put it mildly. This e32 should be far easier to figure out.

The color on the E32 looks just like the E34 red - Brilliantrot. It's just a special order color - like when I thought I'd have a Dakar Yellow E38.

After consulting with the bones, the bones say...

the winner is...

Cinnibar Red!

 Color me stunned. I thought they did not use that after 1988.

So at least spell it right. Either Cinnabar (English) or Zinnoberot (Deutsch).

They didn't. That's why the original purchaser had to special order the car to get it. Hence the "Sonderlack" designation. ;)

What "bones" did you consult to get that conclusion?

BTW, If you ever come across any more Sonderlack cars check under the bottom of the rear bench seat, and if you are lucky there will be a tag attached to some of the seat structure, it will tell you as it did me exactly what my paint spec was for example #490 Schwarzblau Metallic.
Sorry for the late posting, I've just been kind of busy chopping apart my H5s.

and thanks to Justin's tip, I pulled that info from the Schnitzer S5 earlier today.

I then scanned it onto the computer for your viewing pleasure.

Image

As you can see, it has the code for Arktisblau Metallic (045) and Pearl Beige Cloth (01 70)

#490 is the general code for "special paint". I would like to know what the actual paint code is for schwarzblau, but I havent found it yet.

Do you have the VIN from the schwarzblau car by chance?

Dan, I looked at the tag from under the rear seat and it is a BASF color, I will post the # over the weekend but the BMW Glasurit color equivalent is #0490 I ordered a half pint the other day and it matches....

Glasurit Paint for Schwarzblau

Post by kwb150 »

Justin, did you actually find the Glasurit paint code for Schwarz blau? Great! Please post it. I am selling my Schwarzblau car and would love to pass on that information.

I've seen several cars with the #490 code, and they have all been different colors. Maybe thats a BMW thing...

Strange.

Is it like a dark plum or something like that (black/blue/purple hues). One of the 745 guys (before the car was totalled) had a special lacquer color and this sounds like this was it.

That's the one. It's a really nice color, changes in intensity and hue slightly depending on available light.

A schwarzblau in Japan!

Post by kwb150 »

All, its great to hear the chatter about this unique colour, I have been prattleing on about it for years.

The BMW Sonderlach (special paint) sticker is always followed by the code '0490', then the colour description as well as the early paint code.
All product that were unique at the time, eventually ended up with "Individual" this included the 0490 paint code, the 9990 interior code as well as the 0940 "M" codes otherwise desribed as the 940-S.Schreiben.

The inscription on my Schwarzblau paint code is"Schwarzblau-Met.FE-95-5795/Sonderpolster/B.0169.7/9091/940-S.Screiben

Of course, that describes the exterior, the upholstery and the M-Technics stuff that came along for the ride.

Please have JustinB post what he knows about the Glasurit paint product.

Please see this beautiful example of my car(colour and limited model) which is owned by a gent in Japan. The paint colour flip from Blue to violet to dark gray black/anthracite black.
Every colour found on a good bruise!

The 9990 code repreresents the water buffalo hide and the 0940 code describes al the m-tec doo-dads such as flares, rear wing, shadowline, steering wheel etc. The code only says there on there, but with a special build, the detail will only be on the Sonder-Nr. (all documents lost by BMW data base engineers) which is the special build number.
