Thanks for posting the Tii, I couldn't figure that one out and it's been bothering me since the latest Tii came out (1 series).

Originally ('70s version) 2000ti = 2,000cc four-door sedan "touring international". Think "GTO" (Gran Turismo Omologato = GT-class homologation special) and you won't be far off. Certainly in the case of its predecessor, the 1800ti/SA, it was for "touring international, special equipment" and was a limited production car with special equipment for racing.

2000tii= 2,000cc four-door sedan "touring international injected" and the first use of injection in a production BMW.

E36 318ti (E36/5) was a three-door shorter-wheelbase hatchback "Kompact" and probably the first indication of an abuse of a revered term where it had nothing to do with the revered original.

In the case of the E36 coupe (325is for the USA), sport suspension was not a part of the "S" designation and it only served to distinguish the 2-dr coupe from the 4-dr sedan.

The "e" for ETA designation was for the Greek symbol (used for "efficiency" in thermodynamics).

There's much more but I've got to drive 1,000 miles today so....'bye!

also, Ci, at least on the newer cars, means I for injected (which all new cars get) and the C is for competition, bigger wheels, bigger brakes, bigger sway bars etc.

These days, xi (as opposed to ix) means all wheel drive injected.

"C" designates Coupe/2-dr. on the newer (E46 & later ) models, and unofficially but commonly used to designate a convertible model as in an E46 330CiC.

As mentioned, the Ci just replaces the iS when moving from the E36 to E46. Absolutely no difference in performance appointments unless you get something like the ZHP package on the 330i. Most things the same, the sedans of these cars are generally stiffer and more nimble (less likely to have torn rear shock mounts too).

Isn't this designation like the A for automatic? In other words its shows up on the federalization/emission stickers but not the trunk lid badge.

The eta cars were designed with a slightly different purpose in mind. A shame they came around a bit too late, along with the 524td.

I would not consider them "shitty." After all, the E28 was designed with the M20 in mind.

Im not sure if it goes along with it, but I am pretty sure "L" means long wheel base. When it is used in the term "iL."

A timing belt would be rubber, a timing chain is metal.
I think.

Everyone says that, but really its not a big deal. The belt costs 30-40 dollars and needs to be done every few years. It isn't like 528's are dropping like flies due to premature timing belt failures. ;) I could make a similar statement about not wanting an M30 because of the banjo bolts.

I like the use of the "h" for the 750h, I believe it means hydrogen.
