533i exhaust
So I got my newly aquired 5er started, running, and haulin' a, and I want to get rid of the midas special lurking under neath the car. I've looked around and it appears the 535i has way more artermarket options than the 533. Does anyone know if I have to replace the cat and exhaust manifold to be able to fit an aftermarket 535i setup or are the brackets incompatable?
ETK say front 533i manifold = rear 533i manifold = front 535i manifold = rear 535i manifold.
IIRC, the flanges at the cat to cat back joint are an inch or two further forward or aft on the 533i vs. the 535i. So mixing 533i and 535i pieces will result in the end of the tailpipes and the hangers for the being in the wrong position.
If you went with a 535i cat and cat back, the only issue I'm aware of is the location of the O2 sensor bung is further back and may need the heated type sensor the 535i uses.

Do as I did and ditch the entire 533i system for a 535i system. You need 535i manifolds plus the catalytic convertor and catback. You also need the exhaust hanger from a '82 Euro 525i 5-sp with the G260/5 transmission.
If I had a 533i today I'd buy Ireland Engineering's header and stainless catback for a 535i and a Dec cat for the same. Order the exhaust hanger I mentioned above and you'll have a sweet system. You'll also need a heated 3-wire O2 sensor and should rig up the relay circuit used to power the O2 sensor in the '85 and later E28s.

I bolted on a complete 535i system on my 533i from the manifolds back with no problems. This system consisted of a DEC cat and Boysen OEM pieces from there back. You need to order the 535 exhaust support hanger (or modify the 533 piece) that bolts on the rear of the transmission and extend the wire for the O2 sensor. You may also want to convert to a heated O2 sensor and install the associated wiring and relay since the O2 sensor bung is considerably further down stream than it was on the 533i.
