I have 88 535is and i think my brake bomb is going bad. My brake goes down to the floor and sometimes its hard as a rock and the pedal won't go down. Then it will catch and my brakes will work. So from the archives ive narrowed it down to that, i think. I have a parts car an 85 535 and my dd is an 88 535is. Are the brake bombs inter-changable or are they different? Im in cali and my parts car is back home in mass, so my dad will have to send it. Thats why i can't jsut compare them. thx for the help and any info to make the job easier.

The Brake bomb will transfer although there is no way to tell if the parts car's brake bomb has the same problem.. It is a common problem and from what I've heard, it's a pain in the ass to do...
I need a new brake bomb as well but it is not nearly in as bad shape.. I can barely tell that the bomb was the problem, although a buddy/BMW mechanic told me it's bad.. I bought a used "working" bomb to fix it but was warned that it could make absolutely no difference and there is no way to know in advance if it actually works..

I think you may have a couple of different problems.
A bad pressure accumulator (bomb) gives a hard pedal when you hit the brakes all of the sudden hard, like someone pulls out in front of you and you have to nail the brakes, you hit the pedal and it's like a rock, high, hard and not much braking action. In normal driving you don't notice it at all.
A bad master cylinder will go to the floor, usually relatively consistantly under similar conditions. Usually it's under light pedal, it will kind of drift to the floor, you let up, pump it again and you have pedal again. Sometimes it's the opposite, a hard push will bring it to the floor.
As an added complication, sometimes with hydraulic boost brakes you can kind of push it to the floor even with everything right. Try it after you have bleed all the pressure off the accumulator with the engine off. With no boost, you should have a nice solid pedal under all conditions.
