The wires I can see, with a flashlight and a mirror, are a heavy red (with a ring terminal) attached at about the 5 o'clock position and a black (1.5 - 2 mm dia.) wire with a female spade connection at about 7 o'clock with the wide portion of the spade on the vertical axis. My clock references are looking from the front of the car. Hope this helps.

Yes this helps a bunch - One more question if you do not mind - there should be a third wire with a ring connector. Is this wire connected to thse same wire as the "red" wire or is it on a different pole? Also is the "verticle" female connector below the red wire?

Thanks for the help -

Sorry, I could only see the two wires that I described in the earlier post. The smaller wire was at about the same level or just a bit higher.

Ok - it appears that I have a ground short - going to work on trouble shooting that tomorrow night.

I'll let you know what I find.

On the plus side - the car has been rolled over quite a bit - with no crunched valves  Not that I was really worried - but it was my first complete engine rebuild ever.

Gotz to keep this thing moving to make 5er fest!

OK – I figured out the issues(s)
- Fuel pump relay appears to be bad – we bypassed the relay and the fuel pump turned on. I find it strange that if you plug the ignition to the top plug of the starter it somehow bypasses the relay and turns on the fuel pump but does not turn engage the starter – I still do not fully understand that.

- Short was cuased by the dash I put in. I did not get the glove box light wires out of the way when I put the dash back in so it created a short.

- plug wires were in the incorrect order

The car now runs like a champ. I am getting an new fuel pump relay to verify that is completely solves the issue.

However, I am now closing this thread unless there are new issues with this and moving it to the community forum – under Project Humpty 2007 – get to 5er fest

I want to thank everyone for their help on this – Thanks I really do appreciate it.

Thanks -

Well it appears that the fuel pump relay is not the only problem - I installed the new one and it still does not turn on.

Any suggestions?

Well I figured this out - and it is an important note for other E28 M5 owners. The ETK shows auxiliary fuse panels located on the left side of the fuse box inside the engine bay. Mine, for some reason also controls the fuel pump. It has a green and red wire going into the panel. However it looks like the wires do not go anywhere – for this I have no explanation of the solution I found, which is to put fuses in this box. Once I did that, both the ICV and fuel pump would turn on during starting. From this point on the car starts perfectly and runs like a champ. You can check the blog in my garage, however here is a pic of what I am talking about:

The two wires you see there are FED by the fusebox, and they do indeed go nowhere. Technically what you did should affect nothing...bet hey, maybe you know something that I don't...Someone may also have fed power to the fuel pumps through this auxiliary switched power too. You may want look into that.
