Factory badge placement...

Post by bmwm3n528 »

Trying to figure out what the correct Original badge placement is for the ///M5 script on the trunklid of an E28 M5.

TIA,

Mine has never been removed, though it will be shortly when a new one arrives from Mr Haygood. Placement is 107mm from right edge of boot lid to right edge of M and 27mm from lower edge of bootlid up to lower edge of ///M. This on M535i. When you see an M5 the ///M on the back of the M535i looks a tad too inboard to be correct. I believe the placement is identical to an M5 only without the '5' of course which is why it looks too far inboard without the '5' on the end to balance it out. If you use those dimensions measuring to the 'M' instead of the RHS of the '5' then placement will be correct for an M5 with ///M5 badge.

I looked on my cars and all of them are placed 18mm from lower edge of boot lid up to lower edge of badge.
Placement is just 35mm from right edge of boot lid to right edge of "///M" on my M535i.
And 45mm from rigth edge to "i" on my 528iA.
I also have an early 528 with a badge that mounts in holes in boot lid.
This also have about 18mm to the lower edge but 65mm from the right edge to the "8".
There are also one spare lid in the garage without the rear spoiler and there the ///M are placed 35mm up and 85mm from the right. But this might been placed there after delivery.

Huh, interesting.....

I have the paint fading to prove my badge has never been 'moved', although I have replaced my "M" badge on my M535i (and therefore it's been 'removed'). The right edge of the "M" is exactly 50mm from the right edge of the trunk, and is exactly centered between the bottom edge of the trunk lid and the bottom edge of the spoiler (27mm measurement on both).

I do not have a 'normal' M5 or 5xx i badge to measure.

The BMW repair manual specifies the exact location of the badge, but my manual from 86 does not have the ///M5 info, just the ///M and the numbers 'e' and 'i'.

Maybe someone has the later manual or you have a friendly dealer willing to help. Section 51 page 7 in my book.

For the ///M, bottom edge 22 mm up from the lower edge of the trunk lid and 51 mm from the right edge of the to the right edge of the. Since it is both right edges, you gotta know what that means.

Would you be willing to scan this one page and post it here? If that's a '86 manual then that would be perfect for my car. It would seem that some dealer has just slapped my badge on in some random place then which is completely incorrect if what your manual says is true.

Thanks

Here is the link. This so the scan shows up.

Hard to see the ///M, because the manual is very light there, but the lower right corner of the M is the location marked in the diagram.
