Turbo upgrade?
The American 524td uses a very small T3 turbo while the European market 524td has a larger, but more laggier TO4D turbo. BMW knew the American market likes instant power, but the smaller T3 turbo gives up the ghost after 4500rpms. Add an intercooler and that will be lower to 4K or less as the air charge will be more denser. The European 524td still will probably have a decent rpm range with an intercooler.
Modern turbo technology could do wonders for the American 524td, especially with an intercooler. Not only are they more efficient with compressor maps pushing the mid to high 70s, they spool much faster thanks to ball bearing type of bearings. Specifically, a Turbonetics super 60 T3 with BB or the Garrett "disco potato" GTR2860 double BB turbos should perform very well. Combine that with either a high stall torque converter or a 5sp conversion and a 524td car could actually get out its own way when called upon. I have some of these "features" planned for my own 524td......
