324td Hits 50 mpg

Post by BiodieselCleveland »

Finally had the opportunity for a long (750 mile one way) trip to test fuel mileage on my E30 with the M20 installed and 5 speed driving a 2.79 diff. Did 50 mpg in one leg and 52 on the return. Before you all ask, I had the patience to peg it at 60 mph and leave it there for the entire trip.

Was this run on diesel?
Where did you go? IE - what was the geography like? Hilly, mountainous, etc?
Do you wish you had a 3.25 rear in it?
Awesome you nailed down 50 mpg with an old M21 engine.
Tip of the hat to you. mt

Yes, it was run on diesel this trip. Even though it is setup to run on vegetable oil, I wanted to do a good long baseline on diesel. Next trip I'll do on veggie oil.

The 2.79 was just fine. I'm turning about 1900 RPM at 60 mph and getting up the hills was no problem. This was a trip from Cleveland, Ohio to Springfield, Missouri and back. Mostly flat, but a few hills along the route. Certainly not mountainous though.
