hood insulation

Ok, here's one I haven't come across before. Does anyone know about the different kinds of OE insulation for the underside of the hood? I have seen two types. The first is three foam pieces (right, left, center). The second is a single piece of some kind of molded spun fiber. Are these separate options or does the foam attach to the hood, and the black piece covers it?

The reason I ask is that on my car the PO replaced whatever was in there with a junky-looking quilted material. I came across a really nice single black piece for an e28 and bought it, and am wondering about the proper setup. Thanks...

The foam panels were the earlier installation, such as on my '83 528e. The single panel was used on later models. The two were never used together. My web page gives tips on replacing the foam panels.

My 533i had the 3 peice foam, but I replaced it with an 87 528e black piece. Is a very simple job, you just may have cut open holes for the plastic screws on the on the insulation as they may be located differenctly in you car.

Don't the molded ones have recesses for the coolant tank cap and other parts that may stick up close to the hood? I'm asking because I wonder if they are interchangeable between M20 and M30.

Thank you, (stoph99, too) always good to know that the web site is helping. Contact Steve Haygood at [email protected] and he'll ship to you. While you're at it, you may want to replace your hood front seal too, which may be pretty tired, like mine was.

pdx 528e, there appears to be only one part number for the center panel and it has the cutout for the radiator expansion tank cap for the M30, which is on the left side. Since my M20 expansion tank has been lowered to clear the strut brace, I didn't need the cutout. Look at the picture on my web site and you'll see what I mean. You could cut your own clearance hole for your M20 setup. Should be a snap.

As I mention before I did the interchange from an M20 528e to my M30 533i, the only part where it hits the insulation is on one corner of the manifold by the gas cable. But, it is very minimal, and I really like the up dated look.

don't mean to spoil the fun, but according to Brian, the single piece hood insulation went NLA about 3 weeks ago.

I'd held off on ordering it and when I finally pulled the trigger, I was like 2 days too late. bummer. Brian had shown 11 or so in German inventory the week prior and the next time I called, they'd all disappeared, and showed NLA. I've been looking for one since then with no luck. Might just go with dynamat or something. does Steve still have access to them?

You might try junkyards, they usually seem to hold up pretty well, much better than the foam ones so a used one might be an option. One note though, I seem to recall a thread from way back, maybe even on the roach, where someone put the one piece type on an M30 car and it turned out the throttle linkage hit and stuck. So if you end up doing it, I'd check out that part very carefully before you go out for a drive.

I have the 3 piece foam & like it but I don't recomend it.
I blew a coolant hose & it totally melted the foam and I will have to replace it.
I was really dissapointed because it insulated well and looked good, but I was totally disgusted that it had gotten totally corroded when I blew the hose.
I'm going back to the single piece insulation off my 533i

I have one of these from my 88 528e parts car. Vlad's (87 535is) 3 peice foam insulation is falling apart. I'm considering using the 528e part if it cleans up nice.



However, it bugs me that BMW didn't use these on M30 cars. There MUST be a reason they used just the simple 3 piece foam on M30s and these bulkier, heavier, better insulating, one piece units on M20 cars.

Does anyone know why? From this thread it appears they FIT fine.

I also have one for my car but have not used yet. I actually just replaced the foam pieces recently. I had read that the thottle linkage can hangup on the material on m30 cars, and had looked at attaching a ( think e34) throttle linkage cover- but had not gone that far yet. Not sure if that was due to people leaving the crumbly foam under this one piece cover, and that pushed it out further possibly.

I do like the cleaner look of the one piece, and it makes it easier for the PDR guy to get underneath to push out acorn dents in my hood.

Does anyone know what the part numbers are for the thin, curved rubber pieces that secure the one piece hood insulation to the metal flange on the underside of the hood? I can't seem to find part numbers in Realoem. In the picture above, they are the long, thin black pieces and not the large rubber hood scoop protection. On my car, the heat from the engine and the high temperatures here in Arizona have caused them to become brittle, crack, and fall apart.

What's the part number for the under hood panel from the 528? I want to replace my shitty, 3 piece falling off sound insulation with that. (I know the throttle cable/plate can catch on it. I'll just cut a space right where it would hit)

Buy the reflectorized foam, cut and glue that to the hood. I think Chris posted a link for a supplier recently.

It's a closed-cell foam so it won't disintegrate. You're responsible for the adhesive. He will also do a 1/2" insulation which matches the profile of the original. You don't have to put the vinyl decal on it.

I have not experienced anything of the sort, but I have a strut brace on the car that does rub the cover. I guess it keeps the cover up away from the throttle.
