After a 530i, 528i, 740 euro and a 635CSI I thought a project 524 would be a good idea, especially after adding a veg oil greasel kit. Is thisd really a good idea?

It can be a good idea to have a 524td, but mainly as a beater IMO. Get one with good mechanicals and drive it for the mileage. Otherwise you'll probably put WAY more into it than the car is worth. I bought mine for $200 and put a bunch of used parts on it and it was good to go for about a year until the headgasket blew. All of the diesel-specific stuff on it was in good working order, except for all the leaks you've mentioned. After replacing nearly every gasket and hose, it was dead reliable.

In an ideal world you'd find the one-owner granny special with low mileage, no rust, good paint/interior, and a fresh injection pump lol. All for $1500... ;)

Those injector leaks are probably the vent lines, replace all of those.

Just drove the '85 524 from ATL to Richmond. I hope I made an OK purchase.

Hopefully it was not the one that was in Athens, GA for a while, it is the same one you might have problems as my buddy was the mechanic on the car.

Art bought the car from me. I acquired two of them from the same owner in my town and sold the one. I only had it a couple months.

Yep, Josh was very helpful, a good guy. My 524 clips along smoothly at 85mph, (if my kids are reading this please substitute kilmoeters per hour for mph). My grouchy mechanics are solving the fluid leak issues.

I always thought the strong point of the silver car was the strong motor. It just ran so well.

Keep me posted with how the project goes Art. I am very interested!
