:? Greetings, this is my first post over here, I guess this is where everyone moved from the forced induction board on roadfly. Here's the situation. I am running a Callaway turbo on an 86 635. I was out on a high speed run 2 days ago and when I returned home the coolant light came on. I checked the bottle and the cooland looked all bubbly and frothy, which I took to be a "bad thing." The temp gauge never went much past 1/2, so I shut down, let her cool off, and topped off the coolant. Everything was fine yesterday. This morning, the coolant bottle was almost empty after sitting over night. There are no signs of any coolant leaking. There is no smoke in the exhaust. There is no oil in the coolant. There is no coolant in the oil. Boost is still strong at 10+ psi. The thermostat and hoses are about 3 years old (maybe 7K miles or so...) The heater blows hot air.

Have you pulled the plugs to see if they have been steam cleaned?
Is the overflow (radiator) cap in good condition and sealing well?
Have you bleed the system?

I did bleed the system and there did not appear to be any bubbles there. Not sure about the status of the cap. It appears to seal, but I'm sure it is 19 years old. I have not checked the plugs, but they needed cleaning anyway...looks like I have another opportunity to spend quality time in the garage!

Dang, you just described my car's situation too! Loss of fluid, no oil in coolant, no coolant in oil. Mine never looked frothy, but my car did overheat twice.
I checked out my cap and it's missing 1/4 of its seal - So I imagine that is the guilty party. After I replace my oil pan gasket, adjust the valves, and install a new cap - I'll let ya'll know.

Some of the coolant passages run next to the combustion chamber, so it is possible to have a bad headgasket without seeing coolant in oil or oil in coolant. It'll just leak straight into the combustion chamber. I hope for your sake that it is just the cap, but don't rule the headgasket out if the new cap doesn't help your problem.

An exhaust gas analyzer (if you somehow have access to one) can answer the question by attaching it to the coolant resevoir where the cap goes and checking for exhaust gases coming from the hot coolant.

Good call Jeremy, Since the head gasket and oil pan gasket are totally different jobs, I'll do the oil pan first along with the new cap - If I still have problems then the headgasket is to blame.

Checked the cap last night. The rubber seals are both in place, but I hear it hissing when the engine is warm and not running. Also, There is fluid being "splurtted" into the overflow tank from that little radiator hose. Could this indicate exhaust being blown up thru the radiator? Or could a leaky pressure cap cause this? There are no bubbles coming thru the bottom of the coolant tank.
