Should We Create An "Event" Subforum?

Post by Shawn D. »

Y'all,

I don't mind having events in General Conversation, but would they be better served in a specific subforum?

We un-sticky/un-announcement old events and they tend to get lost, and there are associated discussions (e.g. t-shirts) that we keep as regular posts.  Having every event-related discussion in one subforum would be easier, IMO.

If we do this, we will move current and old discussions (as we find them) to the new subforum.

What say ye?

Capital idea. I'm 100% all in favor.
Could some kind of physical calendar be incorporated as well? Just an idea as a tool for folks looking ahead in the year.

That'd be really helpful.  I don't know enough about the board software to comment, so hopefully tig will see the discussion and chime in.

We'd want to designate a "Calendar Beamter," because I don't want another responsibility.

👍👍

Event organizers wouldn't need for a Beamter to sticky the event and then un-sticky, thereby reducing their workload.

Local neighborhood (currently watching Mr Rogers with a couple of the grandkids) meets would also have a convenient place to park their details.

Great idea.

I voted "no," but I don't feel strongly. My concern is that if we have a separate events forum, the current relevant events won't get sticky-ed and willl just get lost. So, if we had a separate forum, I'd still want the relevant events to get stuck at the top until the event has happened.

My $0.02, and barely worth that.

Well, I didn't say anything about not stickying current events.  Even if we didn't, how likely would it be that old events would push current events off the first page?  As of this writing, there are only four event posts on the first General Conversation page:  one is about a 2025 event and three are about 2026 events.

I voted yes because I'm a positive person and it was the positive option.

YES!

Would be very useful to implement some kind of day counting subroutine to alert people that the event is
[HAPPENING IN xx DAYS]
[HAPPENING TOMORROW]
[HAPPENING TODAY]
[THIS ALREADY HAPPENED]

To make it fun, a rule can be established that the whole forum can endlessly ridicule any event creator that does not include essentials (city, state, zip, date) on the subject line.

I missed the poll, but I think it's a great idea.  Surfed on into the ol' mye28 forum to see if any of you lot are heading to Vintage in ~2 weeks.  I plan to be there with the E12!

Would be great to see some E28 crew there and say hi!

Unfortunately, I won't be attending and am not happy I'll be missing many folks I'd like to run into, such as yourself.

I'll miss connecting with ya!  Maybe someday when I visit MN.

My vote is YES on the poll. Very handy indeed.

Seems like there is a quorum for creating this (at least amongst the 10 or so who responded here).
Can it get up and running before more of this year passes by? There are a lot of events coming up and it would be awesome if we could get this online and in use.

If it already is in the works, let us know if you need information for beta testing (I have the whole SoCal Vintage BMW event calendar for this year for data).

And: Thank you for doing this

In the "Boardroom" Beamter subforum, I asked for a Beamter with the necessary privilege to creat it back on March 25th, which was 21 days ago.  The post has been viewed four times (by who I have no clue), but no one has replied and no action taken.  I've just emailed tig, so hopefully it will happen soon.

As a general complaint, if anyone ever wonders "Why isn't anything happening on the board?," take a look at which Beamters have been active and which Beamters haven't.

On it.

Shawn, I never saw an email from you. Odd.

I've been focused on other aspects of life, including my Datsun project. But my lighthouse beam is back on E28s, so I'll be a lot more active...

Should we move some of the more recent event threads there?

I used whatever email you have set up in your profile.  If you'd like can send a test to see if emails from here are getting filtered out.

A little birdie told me about your life events!  I can see how you'd be distracted.

My intent is to move ALL event/gathering discussions there.  I'm not going to spend much time searching the archives, but will move them if I run across them.

Perhaps I wasn't clear.  I mean do you want me to test it by doing what I did earlier, which was emailing you via this site?  I went to your profile and in the "CONTACT" block, I hit the "Send email to tig" link, which is why I wrote "emails from here."  Do you want me to try that again?

You will have to look at your own profile and see what email you have set.  I just learned I cannot see the email you have in your profile, because when I went to "Administer User" for you a few minutes ago, I got "You tried to manage a user with founder status. Only founders are allowed to manage other founders."

If you think this needs to be discussed further, let's move it to The Boardroom.
