Need Recommendation for Repair of instrument cluster for e28 1988 BMW M5

Post by Curtispsf »

Hi Guys,

Does anyone have any current recommendations for repair of an e28 1988 BMW M5 instrument cluster. I had mine refurbished 2 years ago and now it has died (new batteries installed). Back when I was researching it two years ago, there was a guy in the Netherlands who repaired the units with a new S1 board without batteries, but he is either out of stock or no longer offering this.  I'm im San Francisco so I'd appreciate it any West Coast recommendations but anywhere is also fine. Thanks!

What is not operating correctly? The M5 came with two Sanyo lithium batteries on the back of the main board. These can be replaced and are still available. It's a delicate process but I've done it many times.

I would be very careful with Programa. After years of no issues in dealing with them, I had a very poor experience over a rebuilt E23 AC control unit (the Buttons and wheels). At that point, I discovered the business had been sold. I found the new owners are not ethical. i.e they burned me.

Ivo Christov makes the S.I. board elimination kit that can also be purchased at "Angry Ass"  But I see it is currently out of stock, although you can email them for more info about restocking time.

Curtis,
You are welcome to PM or email about your issue. I used to replace batteries and do some work on clusters. The M5 cluster does not have a separate SI board.... those stopped production 10/85.

And to clarify, the "conductor plate" needed for the M5 and later e28s is PN 62111385094 and does not include a smaller "sub board". The earlier e28 clusters had a small sub board in the base and the common PN used is 62111394273. The smaller sub board is what is seen on most searches and has a small white ribbon connector about 2 inches wide.

Very sorry to hear this; I too have dealt with them for many years and have always been satisfied with both their work and their prices. When did this change of ownership occur?

Curtis,
Palo Alto Speedometer - (Palo Alto CA) send the whole cluster. They repaired a 535i cluster not too long ago. Pricey but it now works correctly.

My last experience with them was about 4 years ago.
