Where do you get keys cut?

Post by Etip »

I got two key blanks for my e28 and took one to the local true value where they cut keys. They absolutely butchered it. It doesn't work so I'm wondering where a safe place to get a key blank cut would be?

Go to a locksmith. I can't say every one will be good, but your odds are better than some guy they spent 15 minutes training how to cut keys at the local hardware store.

I agree. Use a locksmith. You may have to go to a couple different ones before you find a shop that will cut steel keys and take on the task of getting the key to mount in their holder correctly. That was the issue I ran into, but the 2nd shop I went to was able to do it and the keys works the first time!

BI recently bought an oem master keyblank from turner Motorsport for 130 bucks. I went to several locksmiths and not one had the tool necessary to cut a steel key. Both local BMW dealers refused to cut it as I did not purchase the blank from them, yet neither would sell me a master key either, only a secondary as they said the master is nla. After spending the entire day calling around and driving from place to place, the last place I went to finally cut my key. They had the machine and couldn’t make any promises that it would work. But it did. it’s difficult to find someone who could cut a steel key and do it properly, but they are out there. Good luck. Hopefully you have an easier time than I did.
