WTB Windshield

Post by alps »

Anyone in LA/SoCal have a good windshield? Caught a rock this morning and now I have a big and growing crack  : /

Also if anyone has any info/opinions on what's a good windshield to get if there are options out there please feel free to share!

Just recently went through this, and there are a ton of threads on this topic here in the Forums.

But, I am happy to add some commentary....that may or may not help you.

My best suggestion is to find a donor car with the original BMW logo'd windshield intact.  Salvage yard, dismantler, etc.  Then, be prepared tp pay a huge price if you find one that is intact and original and the seller "knows" what they have.  As you will find when all the flamers on here tell you to search the Forum (rude and actually not helpful)..the other aftermarket ones, if you could even find one, rarely will fit correctly.  And NO you cannot get one from BMW in Germany....I tried.

Then, it is onto install - it is a SERIOUS PITA.  If you order a non-original Windshield gasket, be prepared to fight it all the way to get it to fit correctly.  Supposedly, the BMW original gaskets (which you can still get from some of the big parts houses, FCP, Authausz, etc. and are bouat $600) are better...supposedly.  I don't know.

But, in any case, put the gasket with liberal amounts of your favorite lube on the windshield and let it sit for a couple of days.  Then you are going to use the rope method with the gasket in situ on the windshield...trust me, it is the only real way to make it work.  BUT, it will still be a major chore.  And, have two or three people helping you (but not your significant other, you will end up in divorce).  One of you is on the inside conducting the rope method, and the other two people are on the outside pushing, light pressuring and massaging on the outside, as you go slowly and carefully on the inside.

Good luck.

not trying to hijack this thread, but has anyone searched for a Pilkington windshield? I'm coming up on needing a front windshield and looking at the Pilkington website, they say they still offer e28 windshields and are also an OEM upper to BMW.

Wallnesneach (sp?) in Germany offers them... you'll pay about 250 for the glass and $400 or so to ship it. Made in Turkey I believe but far better than Chinese. Chinese glass is much thinner. I have two Sekurits and a used Chinese piece that is much lighter/thinner, plus doesn't fit in the corners = leaks. I'd check Pilkington to see where it's made
