1983 528e CARB compliant Cat?

Post by JoelTell »

I'm looking for a new/operable cat for an 83. registered it last year in CA with a 48 state cat but smog is due and I've got to upgrade.

Anyone know where to find one?

What car do you have, is the cat original, been replaced????
Did it not pass smog last year? A CA compliant catalytic converter is sinfully expensive vs the 48 state state cats. I've yet to see a smog tech crawl under a car to verify if the cat is original/CA ccompliant. If you need one, order online, ship to someone you know out of CA and have them mail it to you.

I put a 48 state cat on last year as it was a Nevada car being registered in CA for the first time. It failed due to the stamp so I had to go to smog referree under the premise that it was a Nevada car.
Now I have to renew and it has to have a CARB cat.

I found this one - MAGNAFLOW CALIFORNIA GRADE CARB COMPLIANT UNIVERSAL CATALYTIC CONVERTER 3322037 for $740 vs the 48 state I bought previously for $130...

The 1st smog station in CA checked the catalytic for the CA compliance tag?
I brought a car in from AZ a while ago, went to local DMV for a vin check, then a smog test. No one asked to look at the catalytic, at all...
What part of CA do you live in.
That's about right for the cost difference.

I'm in Sacramento and this place (the older guy at least) is usually pretty agreeable
