Forum communities that work

Post by Adam W in MN »

Even though I don't post as much or visit anymore on mye28, it isn't a knock on this great group, site, and community.  Just other life priorities.

But when, out of necessity, I must go to Facebook car groups to post or ask a question  I'm reminded how much I despise the format.
  • Endless scrolling
  • Facebook by default shows "most relevant posts" so I have to unfilter that to all
  • Search is dogshit
  • Website interface is garbage and it keeps harassing me to install the app
  • Clunky interface and lost posts when you hit submit
  • Oppressive moderation, not just from admins who must approve them and play nanny, but from the bullshit FB algorithm that kept deleting my posts on a Lexus forum despite adhering to the group rules.  The admins went in and reinstated them
This isn't meant to be an old man shouts at cloud diatribe.  Its a compliment to this site and how much i appreciate it.

On a personal note, I got laid off from good old health insurance corporate last Fall ( I knew the CEO who was murdered pretty well) and I've been heavily networking to find a new gig.  That meant selling the Miami blue 991.2 Turbo S I bought last year to free up equity in case I'm in it for the long haul in this job search.

thanks for reading.

Sorry to hear about the layoff.  Unfortunately since I'm retired and out of the business world I'm not much use for networking anymore, but keep at it - sooner or later, you'll talk to someone who knows someone who knows someone who's looking for a person with your talents.  I know it worked for me  the last time I was looking for a job.

Sorry to hear about the layoff; that sucks. Hope you find a new & better gig soon.

I'm totally with you on the rest of it; FB sucks. I gotta roll my eyes at all the noobs asking noob questions there that have been thoroughly covered here in decades-old-but-still-active threads. You refer them here, and they're like, "Never heard of it. Is it new?"

I find myself doing less and less in that world. Too many keyboard warriors fighting battles that mean nothing. So these days it's mostly just family stuff and car stuff. Not to brag and forgive the self-promotion, but I started a group there a few years ago -- I Like That Car -- that just focuses on sharing photos of and stories about cars (and trucks and motorcycles and...) that we like. No specific make or model, just whatever we come across that strikes a fancy. Only about 700 people in the group, and a short list of simple rules/suggestions. You'd probably fit right in.

Forums are IMO the superior format. Also the ones that have been around a while have vast amounts of searchable info so you can find that post from 15 years ago from some random stranger who was having the exact issue you are.

50/50 if 15 years ago stranger bothered to update with whatever the resolution is, but at least you won't feel completely alone.

Thanks for visiting, and good luck!  You're absolutely right with the forum vs. FB comparison.
