For years, Covercraft.com was the BMW OE supplier for floor mats in the USA. They still custom make them for our cars in nearly a dozen color choices. I doubt you'll find better. Around $90 for a set of four, with free shipping.

Thanks for your reply. But I hope I still come across an original set somewhere.

I wouldn't believe it until I've seen it but several suppliers show this part number as available: https://www.schmiedmann.com/en/product/ ... -1-915-655

The new ones are nothing life the original factory (or dealer) mats.

Thanks for the link. At the bottom it says it's for the "E28 X6 (e71), so don't get it. Will email them.

Can you send me a picture to see what they look like? I care about the material.

I believe he's referring to the quality/thickness of the carpet mats. In my experience the E39, E46, F22 & F30 factory mats are very thin compared to the original quality of E28 & E30.

I'm afraid shipping a set of mats from USA to you would be cost-prohibitive.

He had an imitation set on the site, but it has been sold. When I look at pictures of different e28s I see a lot of different mats. What is original now? Anyone have a photo of their own mats?

Original mats had a strip that covered the dead pedal. This feature has not been on all factory mats produced lately.

This is useful for protecting the carpet. My e28 is from 86. What type was delivered then do you know? And are these the original ones of the photo with "BMW text" in it?

Floor mats are disposable or expendable items anyway and I've never had any luck with having a factory set last longer than 3-4 years. They all start falling apart, especially the thin velour backer. For the price and how short of a life these have, I gave up on factory mats.

I went with a set of Lloyds Mats for my M535i, specifically their Ultimat Mats: https://www.lloydmatsstore.com/ultimat-floor-mats
I am not sure these are available in NE but there is likely an EU manufacturer making something similar. The challenge with any after market mat is finding a color that matches. I too have an Anthracit carpet and went with Graphite #126, however it is just a touch too blue (it works, but there might be another color that matches better). So whomever you order mats from, find out if you can get color samples. And of course these do not have the BMW logo.
You can see them here:

For my E39, I ditched the carpet mats and went with WeatherTech rubber floor liners for the fronts. We don't live in a wet environment but I am on and off construction sites so between dirt, drywall dust, and whatever else the WeatherTechs are worth their weight in gold.

Thank you for your extensive explanation. The mat looks good quality. It indeed deviates (for me) too much from the original anthracite, but certainly a good alternative. I'm going to start my search. If anyone has a nice used set lying around, I'm interested in it too! You have a nice interior. Re-upholstered? Rarely see it done so neatly.

Lloyd's is probably the best bet as vinceg101 said. The new OE mats do not match and have lock downs in them. I returned the set I ordered. I had a set of custom mats made and the color is perfect but the backer is thinner and of course the heel.pad is different. There's a number of sacrifices to be made but Lloyd's is closest in my opinion.

Thanks for the answer. Is the heel pad different on the OEM mats from how they were delivered from the factory?

The mats pictured in John's post are what was sold by BMW back in the day. As stated above the flap covering the dead pedal was discontinued over the years. Don't know if finding an original set is possible.

There are alternatives to the current BMW offering from the aftermarket. Don't know what companies in Europe would offer mats for such low production, old cars as E28s. The Lloyds recommendation is a good one.

Thank for the information. I'll give the dealer a call tomorrow. They may still be able to deliver them.

The mats sold by BMW for our cars in the USA back then were not imported from BMW but rather made by and sold to BMW NA by Covercraft (see my earlier post). In my shop, I used to order them through an importer in New York from Hochstedtler (or something like that) who were an OE supplier for BMW in the rest of the world. At that time also our Porsche mats from Porsche actually came from Lloyds. It wasn't until the Audi "Unintended Acceleration" scare in the late '80s that any of our German cars came from the factory with mats. Audi fixed a pair of posts to the floor and had a "button-hole" in the mats to secure them away from interfering with the brake and gas pedals. BMW offered some Rube Goldberg pinned-on clip that reminded me of the mitten clips we had on our parkas as kids so we wouldn't lose our mittens in the snow.

The dead-pedal cover flap was a nuisance and IIRC it was held in place with some stupid double-sided sticky tape—or nothing at all. They would normally flop down and get in the way. I recall tucking the flap under the mat to keep it out of my way. Original may not always be the best choice or, in this case, even truly "original" from BMW.

That will certainly be true. There are many other things that are not made by BMW itself. The reason I want to choose original is that I know for sure that the color will match. Surely there would be someone who still has a used set from a scrap yard?

Possibly, but the darker colors often faded from sun or washing. Did you try contacting Ivo (ovide here on the forum)? He's in your part of the world! https://www.e28.nl/en/product-category/interior/

The method of attachment was a chunk of velcro the mat came with the other side of the velcro attached to the velcro on the mat. The PSA (pressure sensitive adhesive) on that chunk of velcro for the dead pedal probably stuck for about a month before the mat was free of the dead pedal attachment.

I probably have this piece of velcro still attached to a mat in the basement. If anyone needs it, make an offer and I'll actually go see if it is still there.

The dead pedal cover would stay up on the dead pedal for a couple years before it just flopped over and got in the way.

Since these mats were not made by BMW but were made for BMWNA per Phil's comments above, I doubt there would be much chance of getting a set like them unless you can find someone at covercraft that might know where the patterns are for these mats. Probably not going to find any sitting on a dealer's shelf either since they have been out of production for decades.
