Gedday from Western Australia,
I have a 1985 e28 535i vin 1034265. I am having issues with my aircond compressor. I've had a local guy do a "rebuild" so called but it wasn't much better then before the rebuild. I've had 2 other e28 and never had issues and in fact 1 was very cold from day 1. As we are quite isolated in WA unless its a local Aussie car it seems to be all to hard. Do you know of a supplier that reconds or sells new ??
The numbers on the compressor are Bosch 0140903216. Or is there a replacement aircond kit available ???

Welcome to our little group Robbie. We can be odd, but generally helpful.

Normally I'd suggest you search something about A/C, but there's probably thousands of threads about it and you're likely to either go to sleep or go blind by the time you wade thru all of it so I'll spare you.

First thing that comes to my mind is what refrigerant was used? With stock parts, working well, but not new and with R12 they do ok. But if you use a stock system and put R134a in it, it doesn't work so well. Giving benefits of the doubt to the compressor rebuild, and while I'm not a fan of the compressor, it's noisy and rough, the typical failure is the front seal, not the compressor function. I don't know what it's like over there in Oz, but here in the US, R12 is difficult to get or have used. Not impossible, but difficult. E28s can be made to have good A/C with R134a, but they need a condenser upgrade, typically to a parallel flow model, as large as can be fitted, reasonably. The rest of the system has to be OK or better too. Now it might be over or under charged, or be a bad compressor, have a bad expansion valve or a mat of fur in front of the condenser, but from here, 9,000 miles away, I'd guess it's got R134a in it and not R12.

There are a couple of options that use the cheap sanden 508 compressor.

Forget 134a and go 152a. You know this stuff



google it and get convinced.

a possibly more relevant question is what sort of state is the rest of the system in? If the expansion valve or the evap or condenser coils aren't in good shape its not going to work well no matter what the state of the pump is. Incorrect charge, too much oil, or poor airflow across the condenser also makes it work poorly.

What inspired the compressor rebuild to begin with? If it blew up all the shrapnel must be removed or you have no hope of it working correctly again.
