Updated: e28 m20 valve adjustment rocker arm issue

Post by blockerb »

1986 528e m20 stock

Not even sure where to start. acquired a 1986 528e a couple years ago. cylinder head was bad so took it all apart replace with a different head which came with camshaft, rocker arms, etc. jump to now....I've almost got it all back together and went to do a valve adjustment and could not get one of the rocker arm eccentrics to close the gap like all the others. so either the valve is stuck and not closing all the was leaving an un-closable gap or something is up with the rocker arm. After looking very closely, i noticed that rocker arm in question had slightly different numbers stamped on ti than all the others. could the mismatch in numbers mean that the one rocker arm is just a little different than the rest?

I feel like i'm going to have take it all back apart to remove the head and either check to see if the valvle is stuck or replace the rocker arm in question. which totally Sucks! the silver lining is that i obviously have all the parts and know how it goes back together now. I feel like the smart, smaller, part of my brain should stop and and just go back but not sure if my rocker arm theory is correct. Anybody know anything about the numbers stamped on the rocker arms?

The pictures below show the numbers stamped on the rocker arms. The first photo shows the number stamped on all the rocker arms that seem to be correct. They have the "8.2" stamped below the part number.

The second photo shows the numbers stamped on the rocker arm in question. Instead of 8.2, it has 2.3 stamped below the product number. Could this be the issue?

So I tore it all down (...there were tears involved as I've put sooooo much time and effort into learning about this and getting it all together) and removed the head and sure enough the valve is sticking somehow and not closing all the way. No idea what's causing it. I've got it on the bench will do a partial rebuild of the head to see what's going on. Thinking the odd numbered rocker is probably not the issue.

Silver linings:
1. Since I've got all the parts and have put it together one, it should go together much quicker, with less frustration, and a few lessons learned.
2. Since I rebuilt the head the first time, I've got all the relevant tools and know what I'm in for.
3. Will be able to re-do/double check a couple things that we nagging the back of my mind....
4. The weather was beautiful today in Atlanta, so at least i wasn't battling heat and humidity
5. I've got cold beer in the fridge... so done for today...

couple questions:

1. I put brand new head and intake gaskets on it....were on for a few weeks and obviously never got to a point where it was ready to run. Do i need to get new gaskets anyway? I'm gessing yes.

2. I used new head bolts, but I'm assuming i should just buy new since I've already torqued them down once. Again never ran with the new bolts...

At least you have the important thing under control. :D

I'll run used intake gaskets but once the head is torqued and the gasket compressed it's done. You need a new one.

Yep, once they're torqued they're stretched and you need new ones.

ok, so i found the problem. Somehow one of the valve got bent. Maybe while it was sitting and waiting for me, kids, an errant bump, who knows....not terribly expensive to get a new OEM one. question is do i need to buy a whole set or can i just replace the one valve. I would think just to one valve?

I'm thinking i made the crucial mistake of not having my cylinder head timing set to the mark when i put it on the block. once i went to rotate the crankshaft to its mark on the block, i wonder if the cylinder valves were already out of sync and i knocked one when i was manually turning the crankshaft. I recall some significant resistance at one point that released. IDK....I"m guessing when i put it back on this time to go ahead and be sure that the timing marks are set on both the camshaft pully and the crankshaft pully.

Just one valve is all you need, they're not a matched set or anything. However you might, very carefully try to inspect to make sure that's the only bent one, there might be one with a slight bend which would not allow it to seal, but not so much to hang up on the valve guide.
