1983 528e Evaporative Purge Valve

I have a 1983 528e and I just replaced the charcoal canister along with the all the hoses. I just noticed that someone cut the wiring to the BMW Fuel Tank Breather Valve - Genuine BMW 11741277566 shown on the Realoem site. I have a hose coming from the charcoal canister going to the bottom of the breather valve and a hose from the top of the breather valve to the intake manifold. Just wondering if I should bypass the whole system or find some way connecting the wiring back. I have a Bentley manual but couldn't find much about related to this issue. I searched the forums but only found info about bypassing this setup. Thanks

If you bypass the whole system (as I did 2 years ago) and cap the hard line from the fuel tank, the fuel tank can pressurize causing the occasional smell of gazoleen in the cabin or trunk. So you want the fuel tank venting, I'm just not sure if one needs the canister and the breather valve (pn#566). After uncapping the hard line and reinstalling the canister and its hoses last summer, my pn#566 refused to operate after sitting in a box for a few years. It still refuses, but the car doesn't smell like gazoleen anymore so I quit f'ing with it and got back to driving.

IIRC, I might have routed from the canister straight to the throttle body.

Here's hoping someone swoops in here with the ultimate answer "ie. pull all that crap, and put in -this- and -that- and enjoy"

Thank you for the posts. I will review the ETM to see if I can reconnect the Tank Breather Valve.
