1988 524tds

Post by slammin_e28 »

So I ended up with this:

1988 535is with 1986 524td engine and 5sp trans....full diesel conversion from the check control to the gauge cluster. Wiring and all. Just needs some paintwork, mostly wet sanding and clearcoat, and some cosmetic stuff.

This thing is fantastic. Everyone should own one at some point. Sounds like a truck. It's great.

Vids:

Dad was driving....he didn't really hammer on it like I wanted.

Black Kidneys unite!!

That really looks sharp with the shadowlining over the red.

Yeah, still not sure what the trunk badging will say. Kinda want to keep the letters down to a max of 2.....but have found the E34 "tds" emblem....

It's going to get the typical black trim, red paint. Will bodge together some "Euro" bumpers for it.

Right now I'm interested in intercoolers. First thing to do on it, besides putting it together.

The exhaust is ridiculous....like a 6" straight pipe out the back....I'll drop it down and try to do a nice dual 3" downturn tips like in one of the threads here.....I think Dieselboost's....really like that look.

Not that you care, but isn't the downturn tip/look "correct"?

Lemme know when this car is ready for sale. Would love to tick the 5 speed diesel box on my e28 ownership list.

Is correct for me, lol. Right now it's like you're looking into a deep well.....like something the Emperor would fall into....

Will do. I can't wait to start driving it....it's so badass. Actually pretty torquey.

You should probably change your sig now because you essentially have an m20 car now  Anyway, nice car and the 5 speed really makes the diesel so much more enjoyable to drive. Its a shame more people don't do this swap. All you really need to do is turn the fuel screw in a couple turns, bring the boost up to around 15psi, delete the emission controls and the car will be even better. Also if you do delete the emission controls (which you probably will when you do an intercooler) I would take off the intake and clean it, I cannot believe how much build up was in mine when i had it apart to do the injectors. Also since the car started life as a gaser, and now has a diesel wont it not pass inspection in Virginia? or do you guys have some sort of law that says any car that is X number of years old is exempt? IN NJ that car wouldn't pass inspection at all unless you could get it exempted through using classic car insurance.

If only BMW made a big 6 diesel.....

Meh, we don't have emissions here. As far as the gvmnt is concerned it's a 1988 535is. Plus too, I'm putting AQ tags on it, so no inspection whatsoever and permanent tags.

Was eyeballing a tubular M20 turbo mani.....if the TD stuff fits M20s.....M20 stuff should fit the TD.

Really this will be a nice little mildly hotrodded diesel. Plan is to get it all up to snuff and bring to the Vintage next year. Don't think I'll have it together in time for this year.

Well if you want to count the M57 which is like my dream swap into an e28 then maybe...or an m67 Like Ivo did

Ok, I was just wondering because like I said no way would that fly here in NJ. It must be nice living in a state with no emission testing haha

Document any mods you do with any outcome just for informational purposes. Id really like to see more useful and interesting information in the turbo diesel section its been kind of dead for the past couple of months haha but I can see your logic with using the m20 stuff I don't see why it wouldn't work either.

You should try to get it ready for vintage I'm planning on taking my car down this year, I've actually been road testing it with the swap just to make sure everything is all good. So far I think I'm the only 524td going and the only 5 speed one with that so it would be nice to see another one. Also I'm trying to get my friend from Ohio to bring his 5 speed 524td down but he hasn't gotten back to me on that one just yet.

I'd love to bring it....I've just got a lot going on now. Planning on bringing the e34t....but we'll see.

The paint on this thing needs work. Much wet sanding time....then clear coat applications. That's the major issue. Will have to make up an "airbox" as it's currently just sucking air through some AutoZone flexi hose and a cone filter. Makes for nice sounds though.

Euro bumpers are on the list, but again....I'm got money tied up in other things. Really just had to get this thing now before anyone else stepped in.

I do have some small Mercedes bumpers that I may try out....kind of a different take on the Euro look.

We'll see. I need to get my part and V8 e30s out of the shop's lot before I bring this beast over.

Charlie, I thought already warned you about posting in this sub-forum and the one where people blow a lot of hot air (not Tail Pipe, the other one). Now be a good boy and go play in the Eye Candy section.

It fits but diesels don't like a tubular turbo manifold. A guy from Holland tried it on his M51 with a bigger turbo. He thought this turbo was to big because it spooled very late but after switching back to the stock (but port matched) manifold it spooled way quicker!

Hmm, intradesting.

We'll see what she'll do for now. First things first need to get the paint work squared away.

That giant exhaust only goes like 3' back, so removing it and doing the downturn tips will be a cinch. Hopefully this weekend I can manage some time to work on it....mostly get all the parts sorted and see what I have and what I need.

I can't help but stop by my parents and drive the thing up and down the road every day after work. It's just such a damn fun car.

Yeah, that barn is such a mess.

One day it'll make a nice garage....but there's a lot of crap in there that needs to be tossed.

Oh man, I just can't quit.

Dad picked up a Bronzit 1986 524td driver with a Burgundrot 1985 524td "parts car".

Parts car is in nice condition save for the random trim bits that have been taken. Basically rusty free.

Fuk.

So dad gave me the Burgundrot one in exchange for some Bronzit body panels I have. His also has a boost leak as the PO reused the intake mani gaskets...so I'll replace those.

As for my "new" one....It'll take some work, but I'll suss it out. Think I may just want to hot rod it. Thought about taking the engine and bolting it into the Range Rover, but the body on the car isn't rotted out.....so....yeah. IDK what to do. Have the paint to fix on the TDS, but I'm more of a mechanical guy....so the Burg one will be easier for me to deal with.

Fuk.

Here we go.....

Overhere in Holland I know some guys with Rangies and Disco's who put in a M21 and even a M51 with M21 pump. Runs way better than the VM or TD4/5.

Interesting.

I was thinking the M21 would be a bit too anemic for the Rangie....plus I've got all the v12 shit laying around.

Once we pick up the cars I'll start work on it. Polish it all up too. I love Burgundrot.

Probably end up pulling the engine out and resealing it. Who knows. My e30 is on the priority list right now....but if I can make this TD run I'll DD it and save mad money on fuels.
