NEED HELP ON INTERMITTENT START ISSUE

My 535i has begun exhibiting an intermittent start issue over the past couple of weeks. Actually, I believe there were a few issues going on at once. The battery died on me last week, but after a fresh charge and cleaning the grounds, I got that resolved. The issue now is that the car won't crank at times from the ignition. I was able to actuate the starter from the diagnostic port and upon doing so, I'm able to start the car normally with the key in the ignition. What gives? Bad ignition or switch? Someone point me in a direction. Thanks

Check neutral safety switch. Try putting it in "N" next time it wont crank.

I did that and it started, so that seems to be the issue. That will keep me going for now until I get the time to resolve. Thanks.

Might just be slightly out of adjustment. Try putting a little forward pressure on the lever (further into "P") and see if it cranks then. Most likely will.

Actually, my wife did that at one point by shifting out of N back into Park and it started----I didn't know what was up at the time though as that was a few of weeks back before I got sidelined with the dead battery/grounds issue and an idle issue which turned out to be a torn boot. There were multiple issues going on that had to be cleared up to isolate the intermittent non-start issue to where I'm at now.

I saw a post where if you turn the key to run, you should hear the relay click as you shift from P-R to N. I'm hearing no clicking and as a matter of fact, when I tested for the click, it didn't want to start in P---that's when I started it in N as I mentioned above.
