I don't even care! It's a tds. Apparently, they can be chipped to 365Nm of torque. Not too much other info on modding these, but a powerful BMW diesel wagon would be sweet. Could easily rebody it.

They don't make that much torque but with a decent chip they can make 180Hp. A friend of mine had a chipped sedan and it pulled very good.

I have owned a Jetta TDI for about ten years but recently sold it. I'm already missing it and stumbled across this beast on Craigslist and now on this site. Is this a good solid Diesel? Can I expect 40 mpg. I don't know anything about a BMW diesels and this is a euro model. I have already talked to the owner in perpetration to look at it. What should I look for with 180,000 miles on it. Any help is appreciated again I'm a total newbie with this vehicle.

I've worked quite a lot on them and most comon failure is the fuel pump electrical part that goes bad (Bosch DDE), hard to start when warm (fuel runs back from the pump, easy fix with a one way valve) and a stretched timing chain (pretty big job but not that hard, the head can stay in place).

They can be releable but be sure to let it warm up before you floor it and maintain it proper and often. I've seen them with 400.000+ km's.

thanks for the info. I'm sure full synthetic is used for these? How much would a stretched timing chain run, around how many miles might that go bad? What kind of things can I test for when looking at the car.
