Bear with me guys, this gets lengthy. Since the e28 M5 and the e24 M6 are similar when it comes to brakes and power steering, I thought I'd ask over here.

In the M6 race car, I want to:
-- delete the ABS system/hardware,
-- delete the power steering system and steering box, replacing it with something like the rack&pinion from an e36 M3, and
-- replace the stock pedal box with a Tilton dual pedal/triple master cylinder setup with a balance knob/bar.

Fairly ambitious, I know. And seeing as how I have never heard of it being done in an e24/e28 before, maybe no-one here knows. But, I thought I'd ask. Since the power steering system pressurizes the brake system, maybe I can't remove it. But I would have to think there is a way, with modificatinos of course.

any thoughts/suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Since your taking out BOTH systems anyway and replacing with other componants, I can't see a problem. brakes are brakes, it's the other "stuff" that is added to them. The ABS system is a separate system tied into the brake system, and up until it almost became standard equipment on almost every car, was an option... so the "standard" braking system is just "added" to... Your going to replace all of the main componants with other different componants so basically you're not going to have anything left except calipers of the original.

The E30 brake booster can be installed into the e28 and e24, thus eliminating the relationship between the PS and the brakes.

Tell me more about the e30 brake booster swap into the e24/e28. Or a link to a resource about how this woudl be accomplished.

E36 and E30 and E21 are "front steer" geometries -- the E28 is a "rear steer" so the rack would steer in the wrong direction.

Bill Arnold in San Rafael put a VW rack in an E28 front subrame used in his E3 race car. I was at his shop a couple of weeks to look at the setup. I have some pictures I could send you.

I'm going to be doing the rack-and-pinion conversion in my M5 soon. I have all the parts -- I just need to fabricate the mounting structure. It may be economical to have more than one made at the same time.

Will the Tilton pedal setup even work with a power brake booster, since it has the separate master cylinders for the front and rear brakes?

For a track car setup I would think you could go with manual brakes, since you're not so worried about being able to brake with one big toe on the pedal; it will require more force on the pedal to stop the car, but the Tilton techs should be able to advise you on master cylinder size and pedal ratios to make it work.

Thanks for the links. That is EXACTLY what I want to do for the steering. So, it looks like I'll be calling Bill....

Stuart, I do want to get rid of the booster, but If I couldn't, I wanted another way to supply boost to the brakes other than from the power steering system.

Bill didn't do the fabrication. I think he had a local shop do it. I've seen the fab in-person and you may be better off having someone else do it. It's functional though.

One problem with the VW setup is the tire-rod end engagement length -- it's about 3-4 turns. While that is technically plenty of engagement, they cut and rewelded the knucle arms. They shortened them and angled them inward. This also reduced the turns lock-to-lock from 3 to 2. This may not be necessary -- they did race it for two seasons before doing that.
