I had taken the Borbet 16" wheels off of the wrecked 535i and put them on the new 535i in an effort to solve the shimmy it had. The new 535i had 15" Borbet wheels and a very bad shimmy. I found that someone had either not replaced or had forgotten to put hubcentric spacers on with the 15" wheels. I figured if I put my 16" wheels with spacers on I would get rid of the shimmy ... no luck. I took the car to a repair shop today to have the alignment checked and to have the wheels/tires balanced (just in case a wheel had gotten damaged from the crash). Sure enough, the left front wheel was bent. They put that wheel on the left rear temporarily and now, no more front end shimmy!
Bottom line, I was replacing a wheel without a spacer with a bent wheel, basically substituting one problem with another.
Tonight we put the new springs and struts in ... I can't wait!
