Search never works worth a shit here, so I'm asking on the board. I've also cross posted on both boards.

I replaced me trunk seals, and tail light gaskets last month, but we had some pretty serious rainfall last week(18"), and my carpets are still wet inside the car.

The worst of the leak I believe is coming through the rear window, and dripping in the trunk, between the shock towers. Also the carpet below the rear seat is wet, along with the rear floor. Before I send my hard earned bucks to Mr. Haygood, does this sound like a rear window leak? I can't see what else it could be.

Hey William,

I've been an 02 guy for about 10 years now. My 76 is the keeper in my fleet. It's got everything new except engine and paint. Those will come in time, but neither one is in bad shape, so I don't sweat it. There are some pics of it on my site at www.SeamsPerfect.ca. Look under 76 2002 in the left side menu. It needs an update, but it gives an idea. I'd love to see some pics of yours.

I'm sure someone has the knowledge to back me up on my thoughts of window leaks, but it would be nice for someone to use it! It seems that whenever I post a tech question, it goes unanswered, or maybe gets 1 or 2 short replies(which are appreciated) Now, if I had a question about a cup holder, or the best wax to use, I KNOW I would get 6 million answers. As much as I hate to admit it, I get quicker, and more technically solid answers over at Assfly. And that sucks!

Alright Al, I'll take a shot at fixing the car for you. Bring it in in the morning and I'll do it first.

Anyway, water leaks are the following, maybe more:
Sunroof drains (all 4 corners of the roof section) Pour water into them and in the front if your foot gets wet, the drain is open. Rears are harder to get water into but again water should hit the ground.
Taillight gaskets-are you sure they are not leaking after replacement? I silicone mine in and use DOW OS-2 to remove the silicone when necessary.
The trunck gasket should have good corners in it. This can be checked by putting a kid in the trunk and spraying the trunk opening.
The rear glass can leak, but I haven't heard of this or the fix for it. Check along the lower section of the gasket for rust which may indicate a leaking area. I guess using that kid again is a good idea.

Usually the leaks are taillight gaskets and sunroof drains.

BTDT on all the other stuff. Trunk seal is 6 weeks old, as are tail light gaskets. Rear section of the trunk is bone dry. It's only damp between the shock towers, under the glass. Sunroof drains are all clear, but I double checked them today at the shop. No troubles. Vapour barriers in the doors are all new, and all the door drains have been cleared out, so no problem there. I was pretty sure it was rear window seal, but I just wanted someone to agree with me on it. No rust around the rear window, but with 319000 km on the original seal, I'm sure that's where it's coming from.

Al, since it's coming from directly beneath the glass, and you say everything else is sealed, it seems like it would have to be the rear window seal. That covers all the holes unless you have rust elsewhere. The window seals don't stay static over time, they can pull from their original position. If it were my car, I would replaced the window gasket AFTER eliminating all other possibilities, which it seems like you have already done. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Yeah, I'm going with the rear window seal. I kinda figured it all along, but sometimes it's nice to hear what others have to say, and to hash it out a bit.

There is always the possibility that someone who knows E28's better than I do says "Wait, there's a funky little grommet around the rearmost widget, and when the car exceeds 200km/h, they pop out, and cause all kinds of water problems" It can sometimes be nice to learn from others.

I had to get the windshield in my e30 replaced because some numbskull (that would be me) pushed too hard and broke the glass in an attempt to replace the rear view mirror, and had asked the installer to use a new gasket.

When he arrived, removed the windshield, and was inspecting the gasket he said it was good, and I was asking for trouble by removing a good gasket. His opinion was that you only replace them IF they are looking bad, or as in your case, have sprung a leak. When he place the new windshield into the gasket, he caulked it with a non-hardening, black caulk, and then installed the locking strip which was in need of replacement. The locking strip then squeezed out just about the right amount of cauld to fill any voids and spaces around the glass. It was a real education talking to and watching this guy work. The side benefit, albeit unintended, is I have a nice, new, unpitted windshield to stare through now.

But back to your problem, here's something you might try. Remove the rear upholstery and have someone direct a water hose on the car while you observe from inside the car. You might even spread paper towels around to see exactly where the H2O drips in. Without knowing the location of the leak, you're chasing a ghost, and that could end up being expensive before you find it, if you find it.

Al,

Have you been driving the car in all this rain? If so it may be that the water is being picked up by the tires and sprayed upward going into the trunk through rust or other opening around the shock towers. Also, there are some welds under the seats, I think for attachement of the rear suspension, that may leak into the floor area. Since the rear of the trunk is dry I really doubt the trunk gasket or rear lamp seals have anything to do with the leak.

Be sure to let us know what you find out when you get it fixed.
