Odd Getrag 280 trans leak?

Post by S38Mike »

I searched and found nothing on this leak. Has anyone ever had a leak from the top rear driver side part of the trans. I believe it is a seal cover with 2 holes and 3 internal recesses for detent pins/balls (p/n 23-31-1-228-470). I ordered the part and can't seem to find any specific repair instruction for it. I figure it is a straight swap by just dropping the exhaust and lowering the rear of the trans but should I be worried about exploding springs/parts when I remove it? Thanks in advance.

I had a leak at the selector seal. Someone gouged the casing when replacing the seal so even a new seal didn't solve it andI swapped in another G280.

Maybe yours is just a worn seal? If so that's a relatively simple fix accessed as you described.

My old trans is sitting on the floor if you want pictures.

I already replaced the shift shaft seal and cleaned off the trans a few months ago. This is a new leak and looks like it's just the cover. I talked to a few of the 25+ year experienced techs here and they said its pretty straight foreward as long as its removed slowly so the springs aren't lost. Guess that answers it. Cheers!

Very common problem. The new part is redesigned. I also add an anaerobic sealant to the mix. Make sure you have wave washers on the bolts, too. You just have to have the right wrench to get the bolts off. It helps to lower the rear of the trans, too.

Fixed it tonight. Dropped the trans down a little and used shallow 10mm socket. Thin bead of hylomar and new wavy washers. Found out the bolts for the old one had backed off slightly. Upon cleaning everything I found out the original VIN sticker is still on my transmission :alright:

Did you replace it with new? They tend to warp because of spring pressure.

Yeah I replaced it with the updated part. It has a sealing lip around the perimeter.
