Only if purchased there, which they were not,
I usually buy tires and batteries from that nationwide super retailer,
as you never know when you'll be away from home and need service,
or you know someone who works there, which I do, thanks for the reminder,
but would that option have been convenient and/or ethical?

They did use one of the plug&patch from the inside thingies.

More on the Granddaughters Ford Escape. I'd done the 3 easy plugs a couple of weeks ago, they were easy. But the valve cover gaskets were leaking into the plug wells so it needed them changed too, along with the 3 remaining 205K plugs. That thing is not fun to work on. Another 8 hours plus. Compounded by getting the drive belt soaked with oil, trying to clean it so replacing it, then trying to chase down a clicking noise. Which she later said was probably just the CD player that was jammed. Oh yeah, I probably should have said something... But it's back on the road. Runs well, but clearly shows it age, loose as a goose as my Dad would have said.

Last weekend - took the gas tank out of my '91 Volvo 940GLE, took out the in-tank fuel pump assembly, checked the tank for crud, and replaced the lifter pump and filter sock. The latest in a long line of parts replacements trying to track down some not quite random but not entirely predictable either running issues.

Lovely car I picked up on eBay last spring in LA. only 79K on it when I got it, a VERY rare 940 twincam 16V so it almost gets out of it's own way. Near museum-worthy condition. And it has been a complete and utter PITA every time I have tried to take it out of town on a highway trip. Sigh. Old cars are fun, right?

been a week but I drained the radiator and pulled the heater hoses from the Conti to try to match them. Found one NOS at an old stock warehouse for $10, so of course I bought it. Waiting on that to confirm it is what it ought to be. Once that shows I'll see if the other one is hidden inside another hose or can be constructed from a few. I also think I found the source of the air leak on the primary fuel system. I had a too-big hose clamp holding the fuel line to the lift pump, and I think it was pinching the hose enough to let air past so the fuel drained back to the tank. New clamps of the proper type and size instead of worm clamps and we'll see how this does.

Continuing to work on my long term rattle can re-spray of my '84 325e. In the beginning I was picky about matching the factory polaris silver shade. Now any old silver will do. I also got tired of paying $10 for a small can of duplicolor so my paint source is now Walmart. The job look good from about 35 feet.

Ordered a new stereo for my daily driver. I've been tiring of having nothing but AM/FM programming; no tape deck or CD player. So I'm getting a JVC KD-X350BTS to resolve that problem. Bluetooth, USB, 50W x 4 channels, etc... in a sub-$70 unit. Should be a nice improvement; really looking forward to it!

All the car stereo shopping got me to thinking about doing something different for my wife's car too. She drives a Lexus X5-sized unit, which has an awesome-sounding stereo, but it's missing the Bluetooth feature. It does have Bluetooth, but it only works with a phone for calling (I know, right?) It's got AM/FM, cassette, and a 6-disk changer in it, but the changer is getting flakier with time, and just needs to go.

My daughter & her hubby got a new car last fall, and one of the things that gave me the envies is the Apple CarPlay feature in it; seriously cool way of making the phone more useful in the car. So I shopped around and found a number of aftermarket head units that feature CarPlay. The Lexus' stereo faceplate has a really goofy shape, and I wasn't really sure an aftermarket unit would even fit, but I learned that behind the faceplate it's just a double-DIN box. I ordered a Jensen VX4024.





I did some digging and found an aftermarket faceplate that fits in with the factory plastics but is shaped to fit a standard rectangular head unit. I'm also getting all the bits needed to make use of the factory amplifier & speakers, microphones, and the control buttons on the steering wheel. And it'll all arrive after she leaves for a week in Europe with her sisters, which gives me time to install it in time to surprise her with it; she returns on our anniversary, so bonus points for me!

I tore everything down on the big block 390, got frustrated with timing issues and haven't worked on it for over a year!

Wear in the distributor? Shouldn't be too much there on a 390. Vac advance and weights in the spinny bit.

Pressure tested the cooling system in the Continental and it passed. Think I finally got the persistent coolant leak dealt with. Gummy heater core hose and the leaky rad drain seem to have been it. It held pressure for 30 mins and no drips showed up on the ground.

Finally found the spacers for between the bows and bows and windshield. New summer top for the Jeep. And some rubber, toolbox gasket, windshield to cowling gasket, and hood welt.

Finally, after having it for what, 12, 13 years? I got the E12 running right. Like a friggin' bat out of hell. Raped ape, whatever adjective you want to use. Light up the tires, (ok, they're probably old enough to drink) just by standing on it in first. Rolling, clutch out. So I sold it. One wasn't really connected with the other, it just kind of happened, kind of in reverse actually. Euro 3.5's really are hot engines. Lets see, US spec

3.3, 181HP,
3.5, 182HP,
euro 3.5, 218HP!!! Hot damn!

Been having a little trouble with the air suspension on the Continental. The "check suspension" light has been blinking, which is not something it does unless put into self-test mode. Further poking found the compressor relay ticking at the same rate as the light blinking, and the compressor "twitching" every time the relay kicked. The relay coil + is jumped from the compressor relay power feed, and its controlled by a ground switched from the control module. Jumping the relay socket made the compressor go, and powering the relay made that go. Must be somewhere between there and the module. Pull the module, all voltages and grounds at the connector are normal. Jumper the module connector ground to the relay coil wire and the relay goes. OK, must be the module. Swap modules, it goes, all happy. Next morning and its back to the same blinky light BS. Further dicking around finds that when I move the relay wiring around in just the right way it will grab and go. Manually squeezing the relay makes the +12v power source drop to 2v. Pulled the relay, shot contact cleaner into the socket, polished the contacts up, put it back together and its working again. Hopefully it was just a shitty connection at the socket. I also need to put the original control module back in, and put the one I stole from the other car back.

By that time, my mind was elsewhere and I was not confident that I would be able to put it back exactly how it was before. So I swallowed my pride, took an L, and towed it to an independent shop and got it fixed. Feels good to have it back.

Yeah -- not a fun job, done it on my mom's e39 530i

I cleaned up (or started to) the subframe on my '68 2000 this weekend. 50 years of grease is a LOT to scrub through.

drove it to work again. My rusty truck is on loan yet again. Guy that stays with us had an engine failure in his Ranger, replacement cost exceeded value of the truck and available $. Some hack shop did a timing chain (one of the two) and didn't replace the tensioner, which immediately failed. They fixed that, and it had some random "I have no oil" noise that would come and go. They told him it would be OK, engine seized a week or so later. They basically denied responsibility and he didn't push the issue, but they did offer $500 off the 5 grand replacing the engine would cost. Just the longblock is $3800, plus shipping, etc. My guess is a chunk of that tensioner dropped into the pan and either clogged an oil passage or jammed up the pressure relief valve.

Replaced the block heater again. Tried a new one, it refused to seal. Found an NOS one and we're trying that.
