Couple of questions, just to tickle my curiosity.
> Are you running power windows in the rear, and Manuel windows up front?
> How's the coverage from the mono-wiper. You mentioned trying to get as much coverage as possible without going off the top. How'd it go?

Hey Sean,

Thank you! It's been quite the journey with this one. Always something to do but the DP is getting there from the original idea.

Windows-Yes, manny crankers in the front and power in the rear. I have the manual set for the rear but like the power to be able to regulate windows in the back for the dog.

The mono wiper- I tried a couple combinations of arm length and wiper size to get the right setup. Now it seems to clear about the best as possible with the mono-with good clearing visibility if caught in the rain. Iirc it's an e21 arm I ended up running.

Happy new year all

Beautiful!

No such thing as a "JDM" German car, though. 😉  (no matter how many times people use "domestic market" improperly)

Back in the LAB...Who knew a Black and Decker work mate was good for opening up a transmission!  I added a strap around it to keep it in place and used the RustBucket 265 opener on it. Heating the case up to 120 degrees with a heat gun it came right off by hand using a 3 jaw puller with it. Planning on replacing input shaft bearing, layshaft bearing (cooked) and another shifter shaft seal.

Wow it's summer already and I've been lagging on driving season prep. Vintage was not a reality this year unfortunately. Besides pulling the transmission to replace bearings and shifter seal, Ive been working on the rest of the body kit (rear valance and wing), pulled the rear main seal as I see oil in the bell housing and underneath, and still plan on pulling the oil cooler off and going with the standard filter housing. Also plan on a new oil temp and pressure sensor location. I was running them off the back of the head but cant seem to keep that sensor block I have from dripping. Still need to figure out the best way to install the Hartge exhaust tip, looks like will need to get creative with the curved pipes from the muffler to the tips on the SS Euro muffler. Might need to cut the curved pipes off and weld on straight pipes to attach the Hartge "vacuum cleaner" tip. From the pictures I've seen the tip sticks out a little further than I am used to so will have to have the valance on first, and see how the fitment looks and what needs to be done.

The rear main seal is recessed in the carrier so it has been replaced at one point. I may consider setting it flush with the carrier install so it is not in the pre existing spot on the crank. It also looks like I used a little too much sealant on the rebuild so will be careful not to have too much buildup.

It's bearing removal time. The 265/5 has a smaller diameter input shaft bearing so the puller that comes with the case splitting kit could not be used. After talking to Sam L about them he suggested cutting them off to not put any extra lateral pressure on the shafts. So with the dremel tool started working on the input shaft one and the lay-shaft bearing.

Inner race needed to be a little more careful. Cutting at an angle really helped.

Top one off, working on the lay shaft one. This bearing is in bad shape, not as much room on that one so taking a little more time.

Looks like more oil is dripping from the upper timing cover where the bolts for the tensioner are. So plan on pulling that off too and re sealing. I will also re torque the head. I dont think the head gasket is leaking but not exactly sure. I used the "thicker" OEM BMW gasket with the ARP studs so will give a re-torque sequence a try while Im futzing with things.

Image

Since Ive pulled the long tube headers off, I was considering installing the Hartge Short tubes. After looking at the current configuration with the mid pipes that came with them I think I will have to have some custom mid pipes made up which will be a challenge at this point I will hold off on. I decided to send the long tubes and mid pipes I have out to be heat coated.

Image

Planning on a new clutch while I am at this point. The release feel on the old one was a little strange, like it was slipping a little bit. If I went to "dump" the clutch, it was still a smooth release which I know is not right. So a new clutch and release bearing going in when I put it together. Going with the M5 clutch this time around.

Last but not least, Auto Solutions shifter is on order for the g265!  I was not too excited about the aluminum console loose shifter feel even with new bushings.

Depending on what clutch you were running (among other variables), you may consider measuring crankshaft play to determine thrust bearing condition.  Just cheap ez insurance while your in there.  😉

Thanks LJ, I installed new bearings when I recently rebuilt it- so hoping those are in fine order. With the new (M5) clutch and pressure plate going in, I'm hoping that will improve things.

Molasses progress report:

Headers and mid pipes back from coating, and was able to get the input and lay-shaft bearings sorted. Thanks Ben for the help and group buy on the auto solutions 265 shifter. (2 of us lol) I could look at that all day, cant wait to row the gears with it.

Interesting that the bearings are installed with the front cover in place on the 265/5.

Hallo. Finally some progress. With the motivation of BMW day this month locally, and Ben getting his car together the push was on. Thanks to Sammy for his 265 knowledge we have the transmission is back together. A new rear main seal was installed flush with the housing after some research. New M5 clutch also installed, and one of the lower header M5 heat shields on the engine mount I finally got chance to install. I'm still futzing with the exhaust brackets getting the right seal and not having one resonating on the cross member (its close)at idle. Valance and wing on- the DP/Special Priest mode has hit the streets after 9 months off. Feels great to have it back on the road and phase 2 of the original plan going on.

So far so go with most- do need to get another reverse switch on there and work on fuel delivery. It's still cutting out on hard accel on anything but a full tank. Pumps are making noise. (main pump is from 2021) Rear deck needs aligning still but wing seems on there pretty well. Have the nutserts in it with 4 bolts, and some 3M spoiler tape.

Ben and I did the Input and lay shaft bearings, and double shift seal. It took a little bit to get it all sorted but Sam helped remotely and set now. Filled up with MT90 and GTG. Thanks Friends 🍻

Heat shield number 2, my engine mount is going to thank me.

This HF trolley list thing sure made it easier popping this thing on. With the headers not attached yet I was able to put the bell housing on right before attaching.

Ended up finishing it up Sat night about 7pm at Bens

Nice work!

That shifter looks brilliant! I checked out the Auto Solutions website, it seems outdated, many pictures are missing etc. are their shifters still available? How recently did you acquire yours? Does it feel as good as it looks lol

He built two for us recently. (BenGerman bought the other) It's amazing feeling, very precise and solid. The 265 ones are custom built, and hear he is retired so it took a few months to be built. I would reach out to him directly and see what he can do for you if interested.
