Operation Hartge Jr. (Dirty Priest)

Originally I was going to euro convert my 87 iS and add some Hartge parts I had found along the way. Finally- decided to keep the car original, and was thinking I would end up with a craiglist special ( likely some 528e automatic or similar)- eventually have a proper motor in it, and work some H5 appearance parts to make a fun driver...

Then the Black ( Silver) H5S came on the market earlier this year, and although I did not purchase- Geordi was super helpful with ideas, and thoughts- and even told me about a Euro Slicktop shell at Alpinass's, and a dirty M30B34 motor apart- from Cooperman originally out of a euro 82 635csi that might be available too.....HMMMM, this sounds very interesting. This car has excellent patina on the paint and shows a great story of its life, including the side corner markers on it. Speaking to Ahab and Ivo about it- they both had seen the shell and gave it the thumbs up.


The more I learned about the shell, and motor- I knew this could be the right setup for the car I wanted to build. I worked out purchase of the shell and motor from Alpinass, and after talking to him and Geordi about the motor- they both recommended working with Buzzbomb for inspection and assembly. I am sure glad I did, his work ethic, attention to detail, and general sensibility has helped keep this project a reality, and as close to being lower budget as I can be. I can't thank Paul aka Alpinass, Antony aka Buzzbomb, and George aka Geordi enough- These guys go out of their way to do the right thing, between Pauls resourcefulness, Antony's mechanical know how, and Geordi just being Uncle George- I knew I was in capable hands. The plan was to have the motor built, dropped in, started and then shipped over to me for the rest of the work.

Glad I can help out a fellow BMW enthusiast. Jamie is good people - he has the vision to see this 'Hartge' H5s project through. The 528i Euro shell is a great example of a rust free CA. This platform used for the Alpina B9 and Hartge H5s. Only rust is under back window gasket. Up on the rack - showed all floors & rockers free of abuse. No frame rail - taps in front or rear. Just that passenger front fender. Fitted with a powder coated re-enforced front subframe and powder coated rear subframe with Meyle HD bushings & new dogbones. Most of the chassis hardware was acid etched then, Gold CAD plated.

I had to move the car yesterday - touched the key...FIRED right up.

I asked a friend in NH ( where I work) to apply for NH title for it with a direct sales receipt from the title holder to the new buyer. It came with 3 bills of sale through a few owners and not titled since. MA may not have recognized/accepted the title, and would have charged me back reg fee's and taxes. The fresh NH title for it just arrived last week, and is signed over to me with a family gift form- so a new MA title should be happening soon.

Edit: worth mention the title clerk called him to verify the 85 528i model because it wasn't in the book. He explained in was a Euro model, federalized car, etc and thankfullythey issued the title the same. Hopefully that keeps the same with the MA title. We shall see... Since its not going to be on the road in a while I'm going for title only for now. ( NH took 9 weeks or so)

Ah radiator mounting hardware, bushing, grommet, tinnerman nuts, screws and washers.

But you are putting in unreinforced trailing arms and I got a pair with the reinforcement brace just sitting here waiting for someone to rebuild them and install them.

^^ Yes- Radiator supports. Thanks Blue Shadow to the rescue with those. Seems to have been missing few hoses, odds and ends, etc. Alot of hardware... No worries- part of the fun ($)

This puppy should be leaving CA Saturday, and to me by end of next week. Having it shipped to Nashua where will be stored for a bit.

Just a couple last details before transport, including securing the precious Ivo provided windshield in back seat. It should be pretty full, as many bulky westcoat parts thankfully were dropped off or sent there. Paul also sold me a manual leather sport seat for it, and will keep things on the lighter side than power sports. Running into DanaR and Colin at German car day show, they offered me a e30 passenger black manny sport. Sweet.

Does this car qualify for the euro car in USA list? ( since not original motor), and not sure if it is on it already...

The windshield does not fit in the back seat if the car has doors installed. There's a way to get it in there super-precariously, but I don't see a way it will survive getting to MA. We tried just about every possible combination and Ford F-150 was the only one that worked.

^^Sweet Jesus those things are.... Keep the 'tush cool in the summer and toasty in the winter though.

So- The Project is officially heading this way Trucker picked up Sunday evening.... $1,100. LA to Nashua NH ( non running, no gearbox etc in it yet). Paul was gracious, and tried to meet the trucker there a few times with push helpers (trucker broke down in SD, usual story) and even left a note for the trucker to get situated without him Sunday evening. Checking in with "Fernando" today, should be here by end of week. Very Nervous about the windshield ( breaking), and parts inside (stolen). So lots of fingers crossed. Paul bubble wrapped the crap out of it, and settled everything best he could.

I do owe Paul and Antony a TREMENDOUS THANKS ( as PL does), Antony has been does the obvious fantastic mechanic work for me...from all the way over here. Has been patient, cool as a cuke, but also helped share the dream of this motor, and shell becoming something special for me. In addition, a full report of what needed completion, tightening, replacing, dialing, tip to tail in email form. Made sure the lighting wiring was all set, knew where everything was for me... Professional Stuff, way beyond the usual Bro Hookup. Seriously.

At this point might be dropping Saturday evening or Sunday, ( and I am camping for a couple days) My Buddy lives in Nashua and can meet him at the dealership, and help get it into the lot for me

The Eagle has landed, I was away over the weekend, but came up on Monday to check it out! Man I was excited driving up.

First, found the key hidden for me, it has a Klein tools keyfob. Maybe an owner along the way was an electrician?
